Knocking sound from front end while charging battery?
I was going to take the car out of storage this weekend so I decided to check the car out. The battery was dead so I hooked up the charger and left it for a few hours. When I came back, there was a ticking/knocking sound coming from somewhere on the front of the car. I'd say around 5 ticks per second. I quickly disconnected the battery so I couldn't pinpoint where the sound was coming from. It's an '01 C5 if that makes any difference. Any ideas?

Was it the ticking sound that a TOTALLY dead battery makes when it only gets a short re-charge??? If this might be it...just charge it some more...The AGM batteries are not supposed to lose their charge if they are disconnected...if it was still connected, they can lose their charge in a short time. I hope this helps. :chevy :seeya

What you heard was probably some relays opening and closing as they received some stray current. I've not had a problem with the battery on my Z, but my father had his die last winter (2K coupe). He said he heard some of the same noises you did when he was charging. Given the number of computers on these cars, for peace of mind, I'd disconnect the battery before charging.

I heard the same sound last week. Didn't drive the car for a month and the battery went down. When I hit the unlock button on the fob, the ticking started. Somewhere near the battery. A few minutes after hooking up the charger the noise stopped.

Thanks guys. All is fine after a full charge. Just a few more ticks as I connected the battery. I think I'l invest in a battery tender for next winter.

A Battery Tender is the only way to go if you don't drive the car alot. I keep one on all the time and I drive my car every week -- batterys last a lot longer if kept charged. Sears has something similar to a Battery Tender for about $25, thats what I use. Its also not a bad idea to get a Optima battery, they won't leak on the computer thats under the battery.
