Default Remote Radar Detectors

Hello from a newbie,

I hope someone out there can help!!!

I would like to install a remote radar detector such as the Passport SR1, however the only spot I can see to mount the sensor module is in the brake cooling duct. I don't think that would be a very effecient location and it wouldn't be very attractive.

Anybody have any experience or ideas?

Thanks

I'm also interested to know if anyone have experience installing a Sr1 in the corvette.

A natural second question, is it possible to buy a SR1 and install yourself ? I thought it was only sold and installed by authorized dealers.

Oh, I just noticed ... very welcome to the best corvetteforum on earth :)

Thank you for the welcome,

Yes you can purchase the SR1 and install yourself. Tweeter will sell the unit for approx. $600. If they install it adds $150.

Here is the link if someone is interested: http://www.tweeter.com/commerce/prod...90&dept_id=263

If you look at http://www.escortradar.com you will find that there is even a better one, the Escort SRx. Hopefully Tweeter will sell that one to !

I had mine installed in the section with the fog lights. It works real well and has saved me many times. Mounted the display on the side by the shift leaver.

If there are no dealers in your area you can buy it direct. Look at there web to see.

Reddon,

Thanks for the input, I wasn't sure if that was an option

You must have had to cut away the black plastic fascia. Is there enough room behind it to hide the unit? What did you mount it to? Is it noticeble?

My other option is to go with the V-1, mount it up by the visor and use the remote readout in the ashtray.

Thanks for the help

Our V1 mounts just to the right of the rear view mirror and the remote in mounted in front of the fuel gauge. Works great! and is a lot less costly.

Enjoy the forum and your Vette!

Me too. Works great! Mounted mine right on top of the steering wheel. Right in the line of sight.

I went with the Valentine because I love the arrows, but a remote unit should work well mounted BEHIND the plastic nosepiece- the radar waves will hardly know that the plastic is there (unless you have metallic paint). http://www.speedzones.com
had a test of detectors that included a couple of remote units. I remember that one of them showed up very easily to the VG2 "radar-detector detector", so I would skip that model if you can find the test report.

First, welcome to the forum for I see that you are a stones throw from where I live... Did you already purchase the unit? If you didn't, I would do a comparison on different radar units before your purchase and check the ratings... Do your homework!

Thanks Jim,

Behind the nose would be ideal, however the laser detection module is housed with the radar module. I don't want to give up the laser protection.

I'm look into the fog lamp housing for mount the SR-1, seems like some forum members have them located there.

Thanks again.

Welcome BOSTONVETTE!

I would mount the detector transducer behind the nose of the car, near the side of the front MA plate. if the detector does not have a seperate laser detector on the windshield than I would mount the radar/laser unit behinde a cold air screen in the fog light area. I have the west cost corvette fog light cold air screens and they look great.
Hope that helps,

Thanks for the welcome, neighbor,

No, I have purchased yet, I'm looking for input from you guys before I go ahead.

I reseached 6 tests, most were mentioned in earlier posts. My first choice was the SR-1 because of it stealth nature, performance and always on feature- the challenge is making a "clean" installation. My second choice was the Escort 8500 based on the test results and cost. Then I heard the raves many of you had for the Valentine. So, I am considering the Valentine if I can't get a good, neat install of the SR-1.

So... If any any of you guys with the SR-1s want to share how you mounted the front/rear modules, I'm all ears

RSD Tom

Would you not want these detectors that mount on the front of the car as high as possible to be in the main beam of the radar and not picking up additional reflections from being a foot or so from the road? I would imagine you loose some received signal strength when you mount it low (to enable front-end mount).

I just finished mounting my V1 to the passenger side visor hold down screw. It fits just to the right of the mirror. I used a piece of metal stock I had in the garage and painted it black. It is hard to see the mount and detector because the car is black. I use the remote display mounted in front of the gas gauge. V1 instructions in the Archives give a detailed installation that is easy to follow.

Like many others, I bought several other detectors ($400-500 total) before buying the first V1. I now have 2 and was sorry I wasted money on the “other” detectors.

Welcome BostonVette! :seeya
I haven't purchased my radar yet but since you ask, I really want the right radar detector, too; but I want it hidden as much as possible and have 360 degree capability. Does anyone know whether the hidding spots prevent full range detection?

A detector needs a rear antenna with a clear view to work well back there. But any detector will give some warning of radar behind you due to reflections (from signs, buildings, and vehicles) hitting the front antenna. Only problem is that you could mistake the weak reflected signal from behind, for a normal signal way out ahead of you. Uh-oh. That's why I like the Valentine arrows- they allow me to quickly evaluate each signal. Most of the time I can recognize that the signal is not, at the moment, a threat. I've used several types of detectors over the years; I'd say that a normal detector will save you from about 90% of radar tickets, a Valentine ups that to 95% plus allowing you to keep up your speed more constant.

A stealth installation will not save you from as many radar tickets, but will not pi$$ off an Officer who might be inclined to give you just a warning. Your choice.

The Escort SRX loks like a great unit, but for $1,500 it had BETTER be great. Of course you get laser jamming included in that price, which would cost several hundred dollars separately. If they would make a version with directional arrows, I'd buy one in a minute.
