one headlight will not come up.......sometimes
i have a friend with a 03 coupe with 9000 miles on it and the drivers side headlight will not come up sometimes. if i tap on the motor it will work fine for a week or so

Check the connectors for corrosion pull the connectors and check the pins. If all looks well you could proceed as following
Option 1 remove the motor and clean the brushes and the shaft they ride on. Pretty easy just did this to my z06
Option 2 buy a replacement motor
,......any grinding noises or does it just not operate?

Usually a stripped plastic headlight gear is the cause. It will get worse, and cause a "machine gun" sound later.
There are 2 vendors for metal gears, they cost about $50 (or 2 for $80), do a search. Takes a while to install, but MUCH cheaper than replacing motor.

My first step would be to shoot the connectors with electrical contact cleaner generously.......luck may be with you
