I am just starting to put mods on my 2001 Corvette coupe with automatic transmission. A friend of mine gave me an RM Racing induction filter and I bought an Air Coupler and Corsa Indy exhaust. I do race at local tracks. These minor mods give me about .3 to .5 seconds faster 1/4 mile times.
Still can't get the darn thing below 13.5 @105mph. I must be doing something wrong. So, I have many questions.
Should I leave traction control/active handling on? Use competitive driving? Or turn off both? When I turn off both, I seem to loose traction a lot more. I usually race in competitive mode, and have never tried it with tranction control on. A friend, non-vette owner, he has a Typhoon, told me not too.
Also, what is the best HP mods for the money. I am seriously thinking nitros (100 shot unless someone tells me I can run more). I have been quoted a GenX1 kit with pressure gauge, bottle heater, fitrous filter, blow down fitting and tube, and safety switch. In addition, adding a purge. This kit was quoted at $1099 installed. Also asked if I wanted a remote bottle opener or TPS switch for extra. Truth is, I don't know what all this stuff is and what I need. I also worry that the extra HP will really make me lose traction while racing. Is $1100 too much for nitrous? Do I need the remote bottle opener or TPS switch (whatever a TPS switch is)? Can I run 150 shot without killing my engine? Can my gears and transmission handle even the 100 shot?
I've been seeing alot about Torque Converters here. What is a good torque converter to get, and the approximate price?
What other low cost, high HP mods should I consider? Sorry I am so clueless. But I am a fast learner.
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (WorldofOutlaws)
Being new, I don't know if I posted this to the wrong forum, so I reposted it on the Engine Mods forum. Sorry if this is the wrong place. Did I mention I was new?
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (WorldofOutlaws)
Well, I hear that a TTS Poweloader is great for auto C5's. It can be programmed for your mods and really makes the car shift more aggressively.
I think there are a few people running 150 wet shots of nitrous. However, most recommend to get all the safety goodies when putting nitrous on a "stock" LS1. These include bottle warmer, window switch, WOT switch, purge line, etc. Someone with more knowledge will chime in soon.
The best mod for HP (atleast the cheapest) is an intake which you have already done. I would think a Powerloader is the best way to go.
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (Patman36)
Thanks for responding.
I haven't heard of the TTS Powerloader. I have been patiently waiting for Hypertech to "crack the code" for the 2001, and don't know how long that will be. Is the TTS similar and actually available for the 2001?
I also recently saw something on an LS1 Edit posted here. I haven't had time to investigate it yet though.
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (WorldofOutlaws)
WorldofOutlaws....I KNOW how you feel...Been there! :yesnod:
Having a 2001 A4 myself I can tell you there are some really productive mods that WILL work.If you have already done your intake then now you have to get the exhaust cleaned up. The TPIS headers will unleash about 15-20 h.p. and give you some good torque...PULL THE CATS,they're holding back even more h.p. and alot of torque....very restrictive!! Next get yourself a good set of exhausts.I chose the Corsa's because there is no resonance inside the cabin but there a few good choices out there, find one you like. The exhaust is where the restrictive h.p. and torque is and is a fudamental mod you really should consider before using power adders and anything else.Get the air in quick and get it out quick ...You should see some good results and the sound is gratifying every day:D
Check out my homepage for akll my mods.I have pics and have documented every mod I've done.Hope this helps.:D
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (vstella)
Welcome aboard!
If I were in your shoes I'd get a converter and some 3.42's or 3.73's. They make a huge difference and are always there unlike nitrous. Vstella has run some real good times with his 2800 and 3.42's.
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (WorldofOutlaws)
Welcome to the forum!!! This place rules! C5Cemo is right. You can find a used 3:42 rearend on here for about $500-$600. 3:73's would be better at $1700+. I have the Precision Industries Vigilante 2600 stall,$650, (your stall will change with any added torque), it's perfect. I know you would like these first before you did the nitrous. I run 150 wet shot with no problems, but I'm trying to get away from the nitrous. Nitrous is awsome, you just can't depend on your bottle being full!!! I gained 1/2 a sec. with the T/C and 3/10th's with the 3:73 gear. Nitrous Express makes a very good kit, and there jets are right on, unlike some of those others. For the rest, just see my sig. :seeya :seeya [IMG][/IMG]

Ok, I'm pretty new too, and I finally changed my mind about modding my car (long story :)).
How much of a difference will high-flow cats make? I'd like to keep my emissions somewhat respectable, even though we don't have emissions testing where I live.
I've got a Blackwing coming in next week, courtesy of Exit28. Next on my list is a new set of headers, high flow cat, and exhaust. How much of a difference does a new pushrod make? Since I'm new to modding, I'm leery of things that change the internals of my engine (plus, I imagine it voids my warranty. Do headers?)
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (WorldofOutlaws)
I don't know which rearend you have. You can look under the rear of the car and find a sticker on your diff. that will say either 2:73 or 3:15. 2:73 sucks. You have to pull the rearend out to change the T/C so you might as well get the diff. too while your in there and save the labor charges. I have a P.I. T/C that stalls at 2600. Putting more mods on car ,increasing hp and torque will automatically change your stall speed. Mine doesn't stall higher yet but it will with my H/C package. You don't have to change the gear,(I would) a 2600 stall will light up your tires if you have 3:15 gear. Then your only problem will be traction!
Re: New to Corvette and request mod help (ScreaminDemon)
I have to agree with the above suggestions, for how you want to use the car, gears and converter would be my next purchase. After that, add the nitrous and you will probably be knocking on high 11's.
