It got me a little paranoid, so I went out and carefully listened to my motor when it was cold. I did not hear any ticking, but I did hear a pretty strange noise when I shut the motor off. I actually hear it every time I turn off the ignition, but it was more noticeable this time because I had the hood up in the garage.
It's a noise that is difficult to explain, but it pretty much sounds like something keeps moving for a second after the engine is cut off. I initially just thought this was a normal sound for the ls1, but figured I would send out this post and make sure.
Re: Noise when turning ignition off (QuickSilver2002)
The only thing I hear a couple of seconds after switching off is what I assume to be the column lock engaging. A sort of motorised buzz for less than a second.
Re: Noise when turning ignition off (QuickSilver2002)
It sounds like you're hearing the clutch. If you shut the ignition off without holding the clutch in, you'll get that noise. Try holding the clutch in when shutting off the car, noise should go away. If you have an automatic... then I have no idea what it is. :D
Re: Noise when turning ignition off (QuickSilver2002)
That was it.
Just tried it with the clutch in and no more sound.
The forum pays off again :yesnod: !
It’s strange that the noise comes from up front like that. Can someone explain why a disengaged clutch would make this noise.
Anyway, I feel much better now.. Thanks.
All that talk about the LS1 knock had me feeling a little ill. :U
If it's worth anything, my car has been absolutely perfect so far and I'm impressed with every aspect of it. Only 1k miles though (better knock on some wood). Think you get a strange view here sometimes since most of the stories are the really negative ones.
That torque tube that contains the drive shaft / input shaft seems to accentuate the noise. I dropped mine and wrapped the whole thing in Dynamat Extreme. Much quieter and it helped my shifter rattle!
