It's one of those questions that's so simple no one takes the time to explain it. I just received a MGW shifter. I have the offset treaded upper shaft to receive the racing ****. I need some feedback on how to orient the offset upper shaft to the base shifting unit. I believe it may be directly to the aft of the car, or at the 6 oclock position. But I have seen a post were it was suggested to place it at the 3:30 position, or slightly aft of directly to the passenger door. this is to make it easier to shift into 5th and reverse. Then another consideration, and I may be answering my own question, shift it a few times and figure out where you like it before torquing it down hard.
Put it where it feels natural. I started with mine at about 6:00 and quickly discovered that it felt funny, so after some driving and adjusting, it finally settled at about the 1:00 position for me.
I put mine in the 6 o'clock position. Don't make the mistake I did which was to try the shifter with the ignition off as soon as I finished the install. You will wonder what the hell is wrong as it will take both hands to get reverse. I believe there is a shift lock solenoid that prevents a shift to reverse when the car is moving forward. This solenoid doesn't actuate when the car ignition is off and so you cannot get into reverse easily. Once the ignition is on and the solenoid allows the shift to reverse it is really easy.
