Wierd sound when AC in on

Wierd sound when AC in on
Hey all,
Today when i turned my AC on it was driving fine than when i got to a red light and went to go i heard a grinding and chirping noise that i felt in the car. It was pretty darn loud and i could feel the vibration through my hand while it was on the stick. I thought that my clutch let go but its fine, so started the process of elimination. So i shut off the AC and it went away, could it be the compressor failing?? It still blows cold as heck but makes a God Awful sound when i turn it on. Any help would be great guys!! Jay
