I always just fix the problem, make sure there is no high side pressure and add freon to the low side until the pressure gauge read out is correct.

Worked fine on my C5 after the compressor went out ~30K miles blowing cold.

Worked fine when my condenser broke on my M3 ~50K miles blowing cold.

Worked fine when I rebuild my Crown Victoria ~10K miles blowing cold.

Damit, I'm inclined to agree. Never before have I needed a Lawyer to fix my ACs, but things are crazy these days.

Is there any advantage to changing out the refrigerant at intervals or is it better just to leave well enough alone until something blows?

Maybe change out the air in your tires for fresh air too!
