Well I just got my 3.42's installed by the Vette Doctors (had the 2.73's). The car is much more responsive both from a dead stop and at speed. I know I should have considered getting the new TC at the time of the 3.42 install to save on the install costs but I am still not sure I want to risk any warranty issues realted to the TC.
Having said that, if I do go with a new converter, I was thinking about the Pro Torque 2400 or 2800. Which one will give me the best results in the quarter mile keeping in mind that I still want good driveability and do not want to have to install the Transgo Shiftkit. Also how much real difference am I going to see with a these two TC in the quarter mile times? I am already seeing much more punch just from the gear change alone.
Thanks guys for any advice.
2002 Black/Black A4 Coupe, no options, 3.42's, no other mods (and may stay that way).
You'll hardly know the 2800 is there if you go with it. How often do you race?If it's more frequent, go with the 2800.If the car is a 100% Street duty machine, and never sees the track..get the 2400. The above post is right...the looser the convertor..the harder it is to hook, and better tires are needed.
I have the 2800 in my c4 below and it's terrific.Didn't do too bad at the track either :)
JD, I do not take the car to the track so are you saying I would be better off with the 2400. If so, how much should I shead from the quarter mile. I was thinking about 3 tenths.
If I get the 2400, would I need further programming for it?
I have had both and I hated the 2800. Made the gas pedal feel really loose due to the higher stall. I could harldy get out of my driveway in the morning without reving way high.
I love the 2400 and plan to keep it even with my 3.73s and level 4 race tranny.
I also know that I will be in the minority opinion.
Well since I have had experienced both conveters now with my car I believe you can go with either one successfully. The deciding factor will be if you plan to add mods later on .You will want to get all the benefits of the higher H.P. and Tq. with a higher stall converter. That's the main reason I chose to upgrade the 2400 to a 2800.Either way ANY aftermarket converter with a higher stall than stock will produce a lash or delay in immediate acceleration. You can't expect the same response as stock converter.Believe it or not, I was very disapointed in the converter change when I first installed it. I couldn't stand the delay in shifts and soft shift patterns. This very common with ALL aftermarket converters. PCM programming will help with the line pressure ..BUT.. you will not get the firm shifts and be able to take real advantage of the more positive hi stall converter. IMO. The only cure for this is the TRANSGO shift kit!. I labored with this problem for many months after the install of the PT2400 and didn't really feel the converter was working .I even sent my Powerloader back for reprogramming..nothing worked...... TRANSGO fixed it. :yesnod:
That is why I asked what you intend to do with the car? Street, Track? Now, seeing it will not go to the track, go with the 2400. I think you'd be better off. It'll give you a little more ease of putting the car in to the powerband quicker...but not overly loose. Good luck, and it's a worthy investment.
Don't do it, get the SY3500, without a doubt. Get it with the TransGo. It has the lowest STR at 1.65 whcich makes it very streetable as tire spin will be at the lowest from a stop or at lower speeds. Its also more efficient throughout the entire powerband And regardless, get the TransGo for the firmer shifts.
I just had the Pro Torque 2400 and 3.42s installed and I could not be happier.
The PT2400 feels just like the stock converter during normal driving but gives MUCH MORE low end grunt when you get on it. It is the perfect converter for the guy who wants great driveability and who is not going to race his car at the drag strip often. Since your car is under warranty when you take your car to the dealer a tech will not be able to tell you have changed the converter if he drives your car. With a higher stall converter a tech will be able feel the looseness very easily. Since you live on the island give Carmen or Dennis at the Vettedoctors a call and get their advice, they won't steer you wrong.
My PT2400 was installed last week...I LOVE it! The car feels great and shifts perfect. Although I do have a Transgo kit also. It would be hard for me to own any car without a Transgo now that I've had one. :D
Either one should do you. I have a 2900 and I am at the track every weekend.
Tell you the truth, I probably would not be able to tell the difference between the two and I doubt the ET would be much different between them either.
Hey does anyone know how total engine torque effects the feal of the torque converter? If you have 300rwtq vs 400rwtq what difference would you feal? Say with a 2800, or 2900 and a transgo. Would it be better to go higher stall with a higher torque engine? If so would it feal different then a high stall low torque engine?
