think I found my fuel gauge problem....

!Using the 'jumper method' I drained my fuel tanks as much as I could. I pulled the sending unit (right tank) and polished the level meter contacts to a bright silver. No obvious problems on this side. Took a break, had a beer (or two..
) and started in on the fuel pump itself. Imagine my surprise at seeing this:[IMG]
[/IMG]That's not right, right? Oh, it got better:

The other half of the pump casing:

And finally, what it looked like once all the pieces are out:

So, you think that might be why my fuel gauge wasn't working??
I'll be calling around for a complete pump after the holiday.

She's Alive! Tonight I re-assembled my fuel pump as it's supposed to be; pump inside canister, float level attached to mounting plate. See, the canister had cracked vertically almost to it's base when I tried to remove the old pump and replace with an LPE unit. I thought some zipties and cement glue would hold it together; I was wrong. Not a trace of the zipties (except some black sand-like particles on the bottom of the tank..I cleaned them out), and some rather spirited track driving most likely dislodged the canister from it's mount, allowing the whole pump assembly to come apart. As for the float level ***'y, I have no idea why it came off. I used screws to re-attach the canister to it's base and hold it together. I thought the screw heads would give me problems clearing the tank opening; not the case. Slid right in. Put the 5 gals. of fuel I had pumped out back in, and watched the guage needle slowly climb up from the "E"..we have signs of life!
Drove to the Sunoco station, and with ACC on, filled 'er up! Watched with considerable glee as the needle climbed up to the 1/2 tank point, then it stopped...oh noes! But, as soon as fuel crossed over to the second tank, whoosh, upwards (or back down; your call) it went, all the way to FULL. Came home on the highway, and everything works as it should. I've got a fuel gauge now, proper MPG readings, the works.
I'm going to drive it all this week and make sure my fix is working. Looks good so far!
Thanks to all my forum brothers (especially RoadRebel and Lucky131969) for the help and support!
