Driving along, enjoying the day in my '02 and suddenly: "COOLANT OVER TEMP" showed up and the gauge showed 260. The "PREDUCED ENGINEOWER" didn't show, though. I turned the A/C on and off a couple times and the temp returned back to 210 - normal for a day like that. When I got home, the same thing happened, so I raised the hood and found that both fans were running.
When the warning first appeared, I do believe the A/C shut itself off.
This happened last fall once on the freeway when I wasn't running the A/C. That time, I turned the A/C on and that cured the issue at that time.
Do I have a malfunctioning thermostat? Why did this happen? I'm now afraid to drive the car.
HELP!

Reason: More info
Get under the car and check the front of the radiator for any blockages. Brush it off and wash it down with a hose. You will be amazed at how much grabage it collects and could very well be the reason for you overheating.

that too but he said it happened before. Sounds to me like maybe the tstat got stuck. Turning on the AC usually won't help the car cool down. Turning on the heat however will.
I would say your guess of a faulty stat may be spot on. I do beleive with the 02 you can still buy a seperate thermostat and swap them out. I know with the newer version waterpumps the stats come built in.
I too am just guessing but a stat swap would be a cheap fix.
