I swapped out my compressor, accumulator, orifice tube, and all my o-rings finally. Yay!
The only problem is the compressor doesn't kick on when I press the A/C button (manual controller box). Boo!
Some high-fallutin' testing later, I believe my controller box is kaput. I can turn on the compressor with my laptop, and noticed that the fan **** doesn't really provide 5 fan settings...
Now. Where in the hell can I find one of these manual controllers for a 97?
I was thinking about picking up a friends dual zone system (except he already sold the controller), but I'm not sure I want to do all that dash surgery...
ebay would be the obvious first place to try. have you tried pulling it off/apart and made sure that was the problem? could be some wiring somewhere between the box and whatever it connects to as well. i'm not that familiar with it personally but i imagine it runs to the ecu then the ecu controls the ac clutch
you sure there aren't any other problems w the ac system that are preventing it from coming on?
When I was first working on the car last summer, there were a million of these manual controllers for sale on ebay. I figured, no big deal, I pick one up when I get to to it... Now... Zippo.
You are correct -- the PCM actually switches the clutch on and off, and thats how I can engage the clutch with my laptop.
There are actually two problems with the controller -- no clutch engagement and the fan selector seems mostly all one speed (very low) with a mild increase in air at setting 5. This fails one of the diagnostic tests in the service manual.

While it may be the control head, you are still assuming it's the culprit. Is your software capable of monitoring the A/C request to the PCM? If not, it may be worth your while to complete the troubleshooting by checking continuity between the PCM and HVAC control head....also checking for short to ground on the request circuit.
You can also evaluate the input/output of the blower motor control module with a meter to be sure.
