I am about to install a K&N air filter in a 02 Convertable. Has anyone had problems with the gasket supplied with the filter?
Thanks
I removed just the top cover of the airbox, cleaned around the edge of the bottom of the cover (where the gasket goes) with alcohol, and then put on the gasket. I removed the paper from the adhesive side in stages as I pressed the gasket on. No problems at all.
I put a K&N in my '01 coupe today, but didn't put the gasket in for two reasons -- first, it was friggin' cold as hell outside and the adhesive probably wouldn't have stuck worth a damn, and second, my airbox lid is painted red and I was afraid to scrape the paint off trying to pull it off. I know there are a bunch of people who say that the gasket isn't even necessary (Shawn from L.A.P.D. among them), but I'll probably try to put it in once the weather gets warmer. I can tell already it's going to be a pain if I don't take the lid off, though...any tips?
FWIW, the airbox seemed like it sealed just fine without the gasket. I'm not too worried about it, particularly since the car isn't a daily driver.
I replaced my air filter with a K&N.I also replaced the cover with a 2002 air cover while I had the entire unit off the car to install the rubber gasket.I can say the intake makes more noise under acceleration, but SOP performance,I just don't know.If there is any increase in HP,its not much. Not enough to feel in my car.Oters,maybe. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy
I did not use mine, and it fits tight. :yesnod:
I also did a sweet mod to my stock air box, click below to check it out.
Yes I CAN tell a difference, even before the K&N with just the holes in the air box. :D
tshac,
how do you plan to keep water out of the box??.
Are you using a hood seal in the front??
If not, you are asking for trouble.........that many holes will allow a LOT of water into the filter box,,,,,,,,
 Like it says NO RAIN! I will NEVER drive it in the rain. Yes, I have a hood seal, and if it were raining that bad ANY set up would take on water.
tshac, sorry missed thatin your post.......have to disagree with you......the filter box cover sits at an angle..........if you went to car wash, the filter box would get soaked.............and I mean like a LOT of water.
I wouldn't do this w/o the seal........but it is a good home mod, and really opens it up,,,, :yesnod:
