First off, lets be clear...if you can smell it, you have a leak. All gas leaks need to be addressed immediately. There are two things that are related that we hear about being a casue of a leak. First is the fuel filter which is located in the rear, directly above the exhaust pipes, left side. For hopefully obvious reasons, you need to look there first. The second most common item is the fuel cross-over pipe/tube which connects the fuel filling tube to both tanks. It happens often enough to mention...the tube cracks or twists and cracks and its a PITA to get too, but again, it must be looked at right away. You have two tanks and there are several connections to and from them. Look at all of them.

why ony when the tank is completly full and the reason I said no leaks is my car sets on carpet in the garage and if I had a leak I would believe that the carpet would have an oder when the car leaves and it dont. Gas would stay in the carpet for some time. How high on the tanks is the cross over tube? I would believe at or near the bottom and this problem only occurs on a full tank, if I run the car enounh to burn a half gallon or less, no oder. I had thoughs of a pluged vent line? I have read this problem on forum in the past but not lately.

Thanks, but I park my car on carpet in the garage and when the car leaves the oder does as well and even a couple of drops of gasoline would stay in the carpet for some time. The cross over tubes are at the lower tank and this problem occurs only on a full tank. if I drive a very short distance no oder. I though maybe a plugged vent line might give me this senerio? I am going to fill my car up today, but rather than fill & park I'm going into town & back anout 20 miles and I'll bet no oder. Both of the other time have been filll up and drive home 3 miles and park over night. I have been on this tank 4 days and the only oder was when I parked the car over night after filling. parked w/ 7/8 of a tank no oder, parked with 3/4 tank no oder and parked with 1/2 no oder. ??????

The crossover tube is at the top of the tanks. It provides the path for the fueling process to get to both tanks. Up on top, causes it to be a PITA.

did my fill up and pumped only 4 cents more after the pump shut off, drove 20 mile to town and back and the car has been parked 4 hours no oder, it the tube is on top sound like where to start, though I am sure I am not leaking gas ie the no oder of gas in the carpet. If the cross over is on top how does the gas transfer from side to side? A pump? or is there more than one tube?

Another possible source of fuel smell, is the evap system. There is a vent line that goes from the tank, up to the Eva solenoid on the intake. The PCM tells the solenoid to open under vacuum, and allows the intake to pull the excess fumes and pressure out of the tank, and get cycled through the engine. on my modded car, the solenoid is in the driver's fender, and the line came loose. This caused a gas smell on my car.

There are two pumps. One is your primary feed to the engine which is in the left tank. The right tank contains a "Jet Siphon" pump which transfers fuel to the left tank.
