Just ordered a set of Corsa Indy's with Pro tips, and I will be installing next weekend! Does anyone have any tips or tricks or anything I should know before tackling this job next Saturday 3/30? I can't imagine that it will be very hard. I haven't been able to find any help in Tech Tips. If anyone has anything they think I should know please post! Thanks! Can't wait to get these things on! :chevy :D :)
I had my Pro Tips installed on my '99 at a local muffler shop a little over a year ago. I've read threads on this forum where the old exhaust could not be removed in one piece (you couldn't get it over the axle). At the muffler shop, they tried as well and also could not get the old exhaust off without cutting it.
Putting on the Pro-Tips is different since it bolts together where the old system was all welded. My advice is to take it to a local shop with a good lift, unless you've already got that and a welder. It cost me $75 and was well worth it. I also had them install a X-Pipe and I highly recommend them. You still get some burbling on de-accel but not enough to be offensive. To me, it sounds perfect.
I did my install of my Corsa Touring system myself. Very straightforward direct bolt-on installation. The only thing you MUST ABSOLUTLEY HAVE is a lift. The car MUST have at least 30 inches ground clearance to swing the old system out, unless you want to cut the stocck pipes.
Thanks for the tips 72 LT-1 and Ellis! Yea, I've heard where I have to loosen the sway bar. I think you guys just told me all I needed to know. Loosen the bar and how much clearance I needed. I do NOT have a lift but I can get the car up enough. I don't want to cut anything! I'm sure with enough clearance I'll be able to get them outta there without cutting. Thanks again! :D
I had mine put on at a shop to. I paid around 65 bucks. I couldn't imagine doing it without a lift. You really have to wiggle the exhaust around to get it over the rear axle. Search the archives, I remember somebody posting instructions/tips for the installation awhile back. You'll love them once you have them on.
As mentioned the stock exhaust can be pulled down without cutting it. The passenger's side is the hardest to get down. You have to pull it back, rotate down and to the side and then call it a few names before it slides out. The Corsa will go right in with no problem and can be bolted up with a 15mm deep socket.
I installed mine, the trick is if you can't get it raised 30" off the ground you will have to cut the original off. I used two floor jacks to raise mine and it took about an hour.
With the car up high enough, loosen the sway bar bolts and swing it down out of the way. On the automatic cars, remove the heat shield just forward of the passenger side axle assembly. Loosen the bolts holding the muffler pipes to the H pipe, and then remove the the rear hangers. Tom Byrne is right, the drivers side comes out very easily, but the passenger's side is harder. I put a small pry bar in the H pipe on passenger side and gently pulled it down about 2 inches, enough to get the clearance needed to get the muffler pipe above and over it (you'll see what I mean when you do it, the flange on the muffler pipe hits the H pipe that it needs to clear.) Then twist the muffler pipe out and down. You do not have to cut anything if you don't want to.
The Corsa's will go back on much easier due to separate components and no twisting. Make sure you put the pipes that connect to the H pipe over the axles first before putting the sway bar back up.
Total time from jacking up to jacking down was one hour (and yes, we did cuss a little until we used the pry bar trick.)
Just installed my Corsa indy w/ pro tips today. I pulled the car up on ramps and jacked up the rear and set it on jackstands. You should be about 58" from the floor to the top of the lip above the 3rd brake light. You do not have to cut the stock exhaust. Each side comes off in two pieces(the pipes and the muffler). You need the height to be able to swing the pipes around the sway bar(which you must loosen). Do your self a favor and have a friend give a helping hand. It is not a job you want to do by yourself.
Re: Corsa Exhaust Installation help...... (The Black Knight)
Thanks to EVERYBODY who responded! I appreciate your comments! I am going to do it myself. I can get some pretty hefty jack stands from the guys in our shop! I work for a trucking company and they have some big time stands down there (sure wish they had a lift). Sounds like if I can get 30" I'll be home free! The pry bars and cussing are all part of the fun and expected! Nothing a few Budweisers can't help me overcome! Thanks again guys!
