Using a small flatblade screwdriver, pry out the shifter **** cap. You might want to put a rag between the **** and screwdriver so you don't mar the ****. Once removed, you will see a wedge that keeps the **** from turning. Using a pair of vise-grips or pliers, work the wedge back and forth pulling up at the same time. Again use the rag to keep from maring the ****. Once the wedge comes out, the **** can then be twisted off the shaft.

Take your time :(, breath easy  , keep women and children clear - and preferably out of earshot - as that wedge can be a real pig to remove :boxing and you don't want them to learn any new words :cuss !!

Removing the factory shift **** is the most awkward 'simple' task to do on the car. But its well worth it :yesnod: I did the mod the morning after getting the car home and I'm much happier for it.

Be Careful removing the pin. I was too anxious and rushed causing the pin to break off making a simple job a complicated one. Go slow and gently(but firmly) loosen it upwards.
good luck!

clamp a pair of visegrips onto the pin, then use a hammer and gently tap the visegrips up to release the pin.

works like a charm!

Spraying a little WD-40 at the base of the pin won't hurt either. Take your time and it will come out.

Yes, take your time! the second time i did it i was rushing and started chipping the t-steak all over the place....I had no choice but to drill the whole thing out which left such a mess....I was not happy but it was because i was rushing. It also didn't help that when i inserted it the first time i really stuck it in there.

This should help, a how-to for the shift boot, but it includes how to remove the shift ****. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/ste...t_install.html.

Also, if you have trouble getting the pin out of the shifter, I think this link shows a perfect solution: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=260932

Good luck.

It's not as complicated or difficult as it sounds. Once you remove the plastic shift pattern (as mentioned above, gently pry up with a flat balde screwdriver) use two flat blade sscrewdrivers (1 on each side of the T) and pry both sides of the metal T up together. You don't have to force it hard. Comes out easy every time.

Thanks for your help everyone

I am crackin up @ myself as I assumed that was to be one of the easiest things to do on a car..

Anyway, mine was in there SUPER TIGHT and I used two screw drivers to equally apply "lift" pressure from both sides and it gradually worked its way loose...

HaHa - that one alomst got the best of me - as I was getting PISSED by the time I got that sucker out..
