I bought my C5 used. How can I tell if the column lock recall has been done. Also, what is the reason to have it done. When the column locks, does it not unlock when you start the car? I hear mine lock when I remove my key, but have never had an issue with it unlocking.
I see a lot of talk of the column lock, but don't know the background of the issue. Sorry if this is such a dead topic.
What happens is that when you turn the key the column doesnt unlock, leaving you stranded :mad ...Your 1997 wasnt included in the recall, only certain 98-2000 (GM determined that only certain years were affected, which I can assure you isnt the case) ;) ...
Since the recall a TSB has been released to address 97-2001.If you have a 97 A4,the recall kit can be installed to disable the column lock.If you have a M6,there is no update because the circuitry is different than the 98-2000,and you are out of luck (you should get the bypass)...
If your column lock hasnt left you stranded, eventually it will :yesnod: Get the GM fix (TSB isnt covered unless you have an extended warranty,OR a generous dealer ;) OR get the bypass)...
