Default A4 with 3.42 ratio

Bought used 99 C5 automatic. Was looking over the tune that was in it with EFILIVE. No wonder it seems to move quicker then my friends C5, has 3.42 differential. Gas milage still good too. My question is do these gears lower my top end speed? I think it was originally limited to 170. Tune in car now has it limited to 158. Is there a reason for this? Will I be over revving at 170? Thanks for any input on this. Was thinking of raising limit back up. Not that I drive at those speeds all the time.
Is this more of a drag racing ratio?

Steeper (Higher) gears would usually indicate use for the drag strip.

Where the hell can you hit 170????????

A lot of a4s run 3:42s, as do I. They will not limit your top speed-drag and horsepower are the top speed limiters.

I also installed a 3.42 in my A4. I have my max speed limited to 399 MPH.

I don't want my computer to limit what my car can do. The rev limiter will suffice to limit my top speed. I wish I could find a place to run it up, but I will not speed on any public road.

be cautious here; just because a tuner program says it's set for a 3.42 ratio- doesn't mean that's what's actually installed in the car.

It's true.

My tuner plugged in his laptop in my car and asked me if I had done a gear swap because it showed the car having 3.42s. Still had the stock 2.73s at that time.

Do the 3rd gear test.

A4 with 3.42 is the perfect combo for an Auto....... You are lucky your car came that way. I bet you also have a TC, because most guys who do gears do a TC at same time. But to answer your questions, I was told that your top speed may be reduced by 1-5 mph.

had mine at 167 with 3.42 with h/c 90/90 and it was still pulling hard i was at about 5100rpm. hp and torque on dyno usually cross about 5250 rpm thats why it was still pulling. running 3.73 now and it pulls even harder just havent run it up that high but im curios to know. one thing for sure ill get there a little faster with 3.73's

Hey Guys, here's some facts..

All auto's in C5's came from GM w/2.73's or 3.15's was the performance gear ratio for the automatics...

All 6-speed manuals in C5's came from GM w/3.42 gears...

The higher the number the lower the gear ratio...

The lower your gear ratio, the lower your top speed will be...

Thank you Mike and everyone else. Yes to make sure I'll have to look into it more. I'll look for that tag and do a test run on highway also. Thanks again great info!

assuming ons has enough aftermarket HP added to tach-out in 4th (A4) or 6th (manual tranny).

Thanks

I'd also like to go 3.42 w/TC. Good references for the Chicago area and likely cost?
