If you don't want the compressor coming on then turn off your A/C system inside the car. I'm replacing my compressor right now, about half way done. I plan on taking it to a shop, who took my freon out, to do the vacuum and add freon. Good luck.
I have the same situation. Chevy dealer in Shalotte NC wants $1250 for the job. In the little bit of research that I have done, that seems like the way that I am gonna go! The parts are about $500 but the labor looks intense!
I am in the process of getting my compressor changed out. Less than $800, new one. I use a guy I found on Craigslist that works from home. Hes really good (27 years in the business) and I trust him. He has worked on my cars several times, all good! You might look around and see if you can find someone like this. He has his limits, but what he does, he does well.

There is a connector on the clutch on the compressor. Pull that off and it shouldn't engage. Can reach down to pull it or take off the passenger tire to see it and get to it easier
