I started my car up last night and drove to the end of the block when the "low coolant" message came on. I checked the level and it was up to the "full cold" mark (the engine was cold). After letting the car sit overnight in the garage, I checked the coolant temp this morning (76 degrees) and the level was up to the "full cold" mark.
I started the car up and drove to the end of the block and the "low coolant" message came on again. I drove the car for about an hour and the operating temp was normal the "low coolant" message did not come on again. Got back home and checked the coolant level now with a warm motor, and the level was about 1/4" above the "full cold" mark. What gives?? Is there a sending unit or something that could be bad?
Your car is a 99 according to your profile so it has a sensor either on the side or bottom of the surge tank. This sensor typically gets a buildup of scum on it or the wire to the sensor is loose or corroded.
Check those things out. If the wire is OK then you may need to take the surge tank off and clean it out.
When was the last time the coolant was changed. It's goor for 100,000 miles or 5 years which ever comes FIRST.
Thanks, I'll check those things out. Where is the wire to the sensor? Just bought it in May with 57K miles on it. Now it has 60K.
