Default fuel rail question

I started another thread yesterday about my 98 vert not starting. I starting looking into it deeper and found a part on the rear of the driver's side fuel rail (I think it a fuel regulator or something of the sort) It has an electrical connection, a vacuum connection and a larger round flanged connection (I would post pictures, but I can't figure out how - any help on this would appreciated). The part was connected to the electrical connector, but there was nothing connected to the small vacuum connection or the larger flanged connection. I figured no big deal, I'll find both connections and reinstall them, but I cannot find either the vacuum or the other connector that fits onto this part. Can anyone tell me what should be connected to this? I have spent an hour looking and cannot find any loose vacuum lines or connectors anywhere.

Thanks again for any help or advice. Once I figure out how to post pictures, I will add them to the post.

Something I forgot to add. This part is not actually part of the fuel rail, but it underneath it. The fuel line / part in question comes from the driver side of the throttle body and follows the fuel rail to the rear of the intake manifold. I've taken pictures of it, but can't seem to get anywhere trying to download them to the site.

Does anyone have a diagram or schematic of the fuel system for the '98?
I would appreciate any help I can get. Can't seem to find much info on the internet about it.

This image is taken from my DVD manual for a '98 C5.

The description is as follows:

The fuel rail assembly attaches to the engine intake manifold. The fuel rail assembly performs the following functions:

It positions the injectors (1) in the intake manifold.
It distributes fuel evenly to the injectors.
It integrates the fuel pressure regulator (2) into the fuel metering system.

I checked on my '03 and there isn't anything on the back end of my fuel rail that looks like you described (at least nothing that I saw). Is it actually attached to the fuel rail at the firewall end?

To post a picture, you'll need a photo-sharing account someplace like photobucket. You upload the picture that you want to share to the site and then get the images new address - there's usually a text box somewhere around the image that has its URL.

In the thread that you want to post the picture to, you go to the text input area - where you'd normally type a reply, etc. There should be an "Insert Image" icon on the tool bar above the text field. Click this and past in the image link that you copied earlier. To make sure that the image will show up properly, you can just click the "Preview Post" button below the text entry field.

Hope this makes sense. If not, I can do a more formal writeup on image posting or do a search to see if anyone's done it already and post that link here.

I have finally figured out how to download the pictures! Thank you for the info. As mentioned before, this part is near the rear drivers side of the intake manifold, under the fuel rail. The electrical connector was attached, but there seems to be 2 connections missing (the vacuum line and some other round flanged connection. I cannot find the missing connections anywhere in the engine compartment!

Stick 152, thanks alot for the download info and the fuel rail image. The part I am looking for information on is mounted just below the mounting bracket near injector #1 on the drawing. Is slides into the intake manifold with an L-bracket and sits between the 2 rear injectors on the drivers side.

Think I found the bunny... It looks like it's the EVAP Purge Switch (3).

(1) Fuel Pressure Regulator
(2) Fuel Rail with Injectors
(3) EVAP Purge Switch
(4) PCV Valve
(5) Left Bank Ignition Coils/Ignition Modules
(6) Bank 1 HO2S Sensor 1
(7) Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
(8) EVAP Purge Solenoid
(9) Fuel Pressure connection valve
(10) Throttle Actuator Control Motor
(11) Throttle Body Assembly
(12) Right Bank Ignition Coils/Ignition Modules

If that is the one you're looking at, which it sounds like it is, here is the repair procedure with the proper hookups:

1. Remove the left fuel rail cover.
2. Disconnect the EVAP Purge Vacuum switch electrical connector.
3. Remove the vacuum line from the EVAP vacuum switch to the EVAP vacuum pipe.
4. Remove the vacuum line from the EVAP purge solenoid.
5. Remove the EVAP vacuum switch from the bracket.
6. Install the new EVAP vacuum switch to the bracket.
7. Install the vacuum line to the EVAP purge solenoid.
8. Install the vacuum line from the EVAP vacuum switch to the EVAP vacuum pipe.
9. Connect the EVAP vacuum switch electrical connector.

10. Install the left fuel rail cover.

If you need it, I can also post some operational and/or debug info.
Hope this helps!

Hi Stick152,

That is exactly the part and the diagram is great. However, my unit has another end on it that looks like it connects to something (please refer to the third picture in my previous post) There is a connection with a round flanged tube coming out of the unit. Looking at your diagram is appears that only the the elbow connects the unit to the purge line. Do you have any ideas about where this end connects? It would be pointing towards the firewall.

Hmm...

The picture of the EVAP vacuum switch in the diagram isn't very detailed, but it appears that it should be oriented as follows:
The electrical connection should be facing the driver side of the car. The connection on the electrical connection side of the diaphragm looks like it should be facing down. That leaves two other connectors; one on the right and one on the left side of the switch behind the diaphragm.

Based on the diagram with the switch in this orientation, it would appear that the connector on the left side of the switch (facing the front of the engine) should be connected to the EVAP vacuum pipe. The other connections aren't mentioned anywhere in the manual that I can find. In the diagram, it looks like there's another connector with a tube on it - appears to be the connector on the electrical connection end of the switch - but there's no mention if it's supposed to be connected to anything. The diagram also doesn't show the other connector on the firewall side of the switch. From your pics, it looks like yours is connected correctly as per the diagram.

Here's the description of the operation of this switch from the manual for the '98:
The EVAP Purge Vacuum Switch is used by the PCM to monitor EVAP canister purge solenoid operation and purge system integrity. The EVAP Purge Vacuum Switch should be closed to ground with no vacuum present (0% EVAP Purge PWM). With EVAP Purge PWM at 25% or greater, the EVAP Purge Vacuum Switch should open.

An incorrect EVAP Purge system flow should set a DTC P0441. A continuous purge condition with no purge commanded by the PCM should set a DTC P1441. Refer to Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Control System for a complete description of the EVAP system.

The Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve and the EVAP Vacuum switch diagnosis is covered in the following DTCs:

P0441
P0443
P1441
From this, it appears that just having that one hose connected would be correct. Vacuum just has to be pulled on the back side of the diaphragm to open the switch, so only one of those connections would be needed. In that case, I'm not sure why the other connectors are even there. I have an '03 and don't even have this switch, so I can't double check on mine. If there's anyone else out there that has a '98, maybe they could look at theirs for you.

BTW, I didn't get a chance to read the other post you made about your car not starting. I'll try to find it and see if there were any codes related to the EVAP system, and in specific this switch. If not, it could be working just fine.

Thanks Again. I appreciate all your effort. I didn't have any codes at the time I took the car apart. As I mentioned in my other thread, when I tried starting the car it would fire up and immediately die. After several attempts, I smelled gasoline. I started looking through the engine compartment and found this valve that looked like it wasn't connected properly, since there were 2 open holes on the unit. I don't even know for sure this has anything to do with the starting problem, since it was part of the fuel systema and i was smelling fuel, I figured it would be the best place to start looking.

Thanks again for all your help.

Not a prob, man. Wish I could've been more help with that other line. From one of the other threads I saw you posted in, it looks like you found that it goes to the EVAP canister near the fuel tanks. I'm not sure why that wouldn't be in the manual though. I pulled the data for the '98, so if it did then it should be listed there. Go figure...

Anyhow, glad to be of help and I hope that you get your car runnin' again soon!

One more thing...

I found another diagram that shows the emission hose routing for a '98 vette. It appears that there is only the one connection to the EVAP vacuum switch. There is a hose that connects the EVAP purge solenoid valve to the EVAP canister. This hose has a T fitting in it that goes directly to just one side of the EVAP vacuum switch. It seems to support what I surmised before, but you still might want to check it with other '98 owners to be sure that the diagrams are correct.

(1) To HVAC
(2) To Power Brake Vacuum Assist
(3) To EVAP Canister
(4) To EVAP Purge Vacuum Switch
(5) Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve
(6) EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Valve
(7) To Intake Air Duct
(8) Engine Coolant Hoses
(9) Throttle Body Assembly
(10) Crankcase Ventilation Hose
(11) PCV Valve
