On my way home tonight, I had to push my car out of it's parking spot! No matter what I did, it would not go into reverse. I tried again when I got home and it did the same thing. I just can't get the shifter in R. It will go in partially and the lights will come on, but when I let out in the clutch, it pops into N.. I just got the car back from having the tranny done. It has a spec twin disc clutch in it. It seems to shift easily through the gears, but is very aggressive. The clutch makes lots of noise, especially when you try to slip it easily going into 1st (while in traffic).
I don't know all the 'technicals' about it, but there is a solenoid on the transmission that prevents the car from being shifted into reverse at speeds above 5 MPH. There's most likely a wire connection that plugs into it that may have been forgotten, when your clutch was replaced. Or, possibly, it was damaged during the repair work.
Sounds more like a shifter alignment than solenoid to me.
When I've had the solenoid problem due to a blown fuse 19, it kept the shifter from moving to the right of the 5 to 6 shift path. I could force the shifter to the far right with some work, and then it would engage reverse in the transmission as usual.
If you are not blocked from getting to reverse but having problems with staying enagaged in gear, my guess would be shifter alignment or maybe the synchro gear.
It is an '02 ZO6.
It shifted fine for the first couple days that I had it back. I will have to check the fuses in it and try to contact the shop that did the work for me.
Thanks everyone.
In that case it can't be the solenoid. In the '01-'04 cars if the solenoid fails it does not block reverse ever. The '97-'00 cars it blocks reverse all the time if it fails.
