I am trying to remove just the rear differential from my A4. Do I have to remove trans and rearend or can I leave the torque tube and trans in the car? Thanks for the help.
You will need to lower the torque tube/tranny, meaning you need to take off the TT plate cover, if not taking the diff out will be impossible you also need to lower the whole rear cradle or else also impossible to take out the diff.
Have a jack under the transmission that way you can adjust how low it goes for diff removal then jack it up so as to keep the drive train in line until you put on your new diff. Make sure you disengage all electrical connections to the transmission and make sure that you do not mess up your front cover seal on your diff if not you will need to replace it period. You are going to need another jack to hold your rear cradle unless you completely remove all break line connections which I suggest you don't do. if you need any more info pm me.
We got it out in about 3 hours, it really was not hard at all. It took a few floor jacks, and a hand full of jack sands, but it came out smooth. Just like 02*C5 said pull the TT cover, remove upper control arm bolts, unbolt the shocks, unbolt the ABS module from rear of cradle, support the trans and rear with jack, remove the whole cradle assembly then tackle removing differential from trans. I then supported the trans and differential with two different jacks, that way we didn't have to handle the diff by hand. Only lower the two as much as it takes to pull the diff off the output shaft of the trans. We continued checking the clearance between the intake and the firewall through out the lowering process. It got close but there is plenty of room to get it out.
