I think this looks great, especially on shftn6's ride :yesnod: What type of lights are used and how are they mounted? I'm looking to do the exact same to mine with nitrous purge jets there. Nitrous purge + red light = an intimidating glow of foggy red
I think it looks interesting.
I wouldn't do the red on the pewter like in the picture.
Here's how I would do it...
Several large size LEDs ordered from DIGIKEY.
Go with three per side. They are cheap so order
several colours and experiment with which you
like the best. For a black car like yours I would be
tempted to order the blue ones. Blue LEDs give off
an unusual hue. The effect on a black car at night
would be stunning. The LEDs draw next to no power,
so you wouldn't have to worry about draining the battery.
To actually do it I would remove the black "Gill Guards"
from the car and drill three equally space holes approxmiately
one inch from each other at the very back of each guard. Insert
the LEDs into the holes and secure the them with some
epoxy. Wire them up with an appropriate series resister
(1K to 1.2K ohms should be just about right). Use one
resister per LED in series with the LED. Then wire to the
12 Volts. This arrangement means that if a wire corrodes,
or a resister/LED blows you will not lose all your lighting.
Cover all of the exposed wires with some silicon sealant to
prevent corosion. Since the power draw is so low you
won't even need a relay. Just wire it back to a switch on the
dash. Don't forget to install an inline fuse. 1/4 Amp should
be about right for 6 LEDs. Then reinstall the "Gill Guards" and
see how it looks.
Don't let the detractors keep you from doing this, I've been thinking about it on and off, and I think the results look great - I'll be watching this post.
page exportc5. Damn, not sure if that is his exact screen name, but he did it with the strobes and said it was very easy. He showed me how he did it about a year ago, but I forget. Looked cool. He had the stobes in the rear also. It was tastefully done. He is the one with the red vert/frc takeoff. Very unqiue car. Amazing to see
Levi, I remember the last member who posted on this and I believe he used neon tubes. The light was more even than if he used small, individual LED's. He showed a how-to on the install. Sorry, don't remember his name.
I use Digikey stuff at work and the blue LED is a pretty recent development. A couple of years ago I was doing a digital video enhancer control faceplate and wanted to use blue LED's, they cost triple what other colors cost. I think they've come down. They were very small lamps. I have their catalog at work if you can't find them.
I agree IT"S YOUR CAR, don't let the detractors keep your from doing what you want. I think it looks cool. Keep us posted and let us know where you find the blue led's if you go that route. What color would look good on a Mag Red Convt, with black top and black and chrome wheels? hmmm? Any suggestions?
