Unless you have a manner to check the voltage of the required 9v battery, leave it disconnected from the device during non use. It would be a shame to believe it's still got 9v and then lose the memory features you're using it to retain.

I use a manual disconnect switch that makes the connection instantly, and avoids this entirely. It's pretty handy. Search for "side post disconnect switch", it looks like this.
I've previously used one of those **** type "disconnects" in the top post version. I found the **** didn't always provide enough tension to maintain a tight connection.
