I just had my water pump replaced last week because it had died on me. yesterday night, I was cruising on the freeway in 6th gear about 1900rpm going 75mph, temp was around 58 degrees outside.. My coolant temperature started climbing up, 210-220-230-240-230-240-250... then I downshifted to 5th gear about 2400rpm or so and the water temp quickly starts dropping down to 196 degrees... even on the streets... I need to keep the rpm's above 2400 so that the engine cools down... I'm thinking that at lower rpms the water pump is not pumping enuff water... I hate this, it's a brand new freaken water pump just put in last week. Now I need to take it back to the dealer... any ideas what would cause this? I can't believe 2 water pumps going bad in 1 week.
I would guess the dealer already checked this, but are you sure its the water pump and not the thermostat sticking? It does seem really odd that you would have two go out in a week. Of course I don't see how rpms would affect your thermostat. Nevermind.

Re: !@#$%^& Water Pump :( (YellowZ06)
Did the guy who did the work plug the electric fan connecter back in when he was through? Are you sure you still even have the thermostat installed? (Water that flows too fast doesn't have enough time to get rid of heat properly before re-entering the block)These sound like stupid questions maybe, but you never know. :)
Also, one other thought. Check underneath to make sure you don't have a plastic bag and/or other debris blocking you radiator.
Tx99FRC - The car was running fine for about 4 days after they replaced the water pump, it started acting up yesterday night. I have the stock thermostat in there right now. I will check the fans when I go home later today.

Re: !@#$%^& Water Pump :( (YellowZ06)
Hmmm,....Since you said it was O.K. for a few days, and then all of a sudden something is wrong, I'm thinking more along the lines of blocked radiator now. Definitely worth checking. :)
I didn't think that a vane type water pump could fail other than leaking seal, noisy bearing or seize up  . Pretty simple device. You should look at the other possibilities already suggested. Let us know what finally fixes it.
Just got a call back, after they removed the heads, they said that one of the heads are not flat. I am sending the heads back to MTI so they can check it out i'll keep you informed. I don't want to assume what's wrong or what went wrong and tell tales untill it's all sorted out. The dealer was gonna have a local machine shop resurface it, but I told them not to. I could not handle not knowing what really went wrong that's why I am having MTI inspect the heads.
The car did have a little extra timing in it for california (we have poopiey gas so it should have been a little less) and at first I thought that's what caused the problem for the gaskets, but when the dealer called me back and told about the surface not being flat I doubt that had much to do with it. The car was initially pinging so I was running some octane booster which helped untill I get the computer tuning resolved.
Its crazy how much in love we are with these addicting machines...I know exactly how you feel and none of us would ever put up with these problems with any other piece of machinery. You'll get it fixed and forget about these hassles shortly......get the heads fixed, put it back together, and get your **** to the run were having from LA to Santa Barbara on the 28th (look in Pacific section). Good luck.....
This is where it was leaking on one of the exhaust side. I dunno much about this stuff or if the picture is of any help. What i'm realling wondering is if it is really not a flat surface or a bad head gasket install.. we shall find out soon.
GM water pumps must be pretty crapy. I had two replaced on my Black 96 C4
and have heard of others having problems with the C5. Somthing tells me it may
be the same old POS used in the C4 and other GM cars
