Is replacing the clutch too big of a job to do at home without a lift?
I've looked foy DIY's on this but have not found any.
I'm sure it would'nt be a piece of cake, but
I ain't skeerd
What does a dealer charge?
Re: Is replacing the clutch yourself possible? (Bugster57)
it can not be done at home. the whole log (torque tube/trans/diff) has to be removed, after removing the rear suspension cradle. it is not a simple job. it can not be done by 1 tech alone.
Re: Is replacing the clutch yourself possible? (no cure)
MattG did his at home on jackstands ;). It can be done but you need a buddy and the proper equipment to cradle the tranny and torque tube out :D. Pick up a set of the Helms service manuals and have at it :)

Looks familiar. I saw Billy2kFRC's car all ripped apart like that. Funny thing is, six hours later it was running again. It's imperative to put everything new back in the way you took it out...or vibrations can haunt the hell out of you.

Thanks for the info guys, if anyone has taken pics and notes while the repair was in progress please let me know.
If no one has done a DIY on the swap out, I'll do it when I do mine.
I would appreciate any helpful hints etc...
Re: Is replacing the clutch yourself possible? (C5 Tweaker)
C5 Tweaker,
You've got the pilot bearing puller now, but this may help someone else. I haven't used it on pilot bearings, but I have used the technique on pilot bushings and it should work on the bearing as well.
Pack the space behind the bearing with wheel bearing grease. Just push it into the hole in the bearing where the shaft inserts. Then sand a wooden dowel to just fit the hole in the bearing. Insert the dowel and smack it with a hammer.
Because of the incompressablity of the grease the pilot bearing is forced out of the flywheel. I have heard of using wet tissue paper instead of the grease. I do know that the grease works just fine.
Re: Is replacing the clutch yourself possible? (MDT)
WARNING
MDT:
This is NOT a recommended procedure on LS1/LS6's because there is a pressed in plug in the back of the crankshaft. A friend of mine tried this and pushed that plug in, he then had to extract it and get a new one.
Use a pilot bearing puller.
I use the wet toilet paper method on traditional SBC's.
