Ive done some searching on this and ls1-tech forums and am still a little confused on some stuff.
I am going to buy an lq9 block and start there. Once bored 30 over and i have the rotating assembly in is where my questions start.
i know there are a wide range of cams from street to strip applications and will get there when i decide where ill drive my car, but most likley is a street build. But heads, and intake and other questions still exist.
Can i use my ls1 heads and intake until i pull the ls1 out and sell it? Im aware that the power numbers will be low but this will be an ongoing project.
The eventual outcome will be AFR 225 heads with 62 cc chambers.
You could run the stock heads and intake, but you would be leaving a lot on the table. Personally, I'd run stock 317 heads ( you can pick these up for $200-300) and an ls2 manifold (or ls6). I have an LQ9 based 408 in my TT truck and I still run worked 317 heads. Basically, 317 heads are 243 s with more chamber size and regular valves.
Comparatively speaking, the LS1 stuff is a downgrade.
Also, don't spend the money on an LQ9 -- get an LQ4. Same block, but you will save some bucks if you buy a pull out.
I still pick L-92 or LS3 heads for my favorite bang for buck if you have at least a 4 inch bore.. There was a write up in a fairly recent issue of GM High Performance. A stock LS3 head made 600 hp on the dyno with a stock L-76 manifold. Admittedly the cam was much bigger than I would run on the street, I think it was something like 242 duration at .05 lift. It just shows the potential of that head. TSP's ported version of that head is even better.
where can you get a lq4 block at? there is a very large auto salvage lot that im sure i could pull a block from but dont know what p[latforms they are in. Also why cant you just bore an LS1 block 60 over to get the 408 size?
No offense, but taking a 408 and putting LS1 heads and intake on it would be downright stupid. The motor would be completely choked up. IMO, if you eventually want AFR heads, just save up so you can do it once. At the bare minimum run an LS6 intake, but ideally you should have a fast 90/90. If you start out with LS1 heads, you're gonna have to spend a ton of more money to get the AFR heads, install them, then have the car retuned all over.
have all the facilities to do all the work i need to, from boring the block, to dyno and tune, just wondering if i would be able to do it till i can sell the ls1 short block and get the afr's and then the fast 102
