I was driving to work today and it started dinging at me... lights on the dash came on indicating an overheating problem... looked down at the temp gauge and it said 260... ack!... Immediatly found a parking lot and shut her down (took about 1-1 1/2 minutes to get her parked and shut down)
So my first question... Even though she still runs good, could I have damaged anything?
Second question... I got her home... checked the water (she was just a tad low) started her up and watched the temp... it came up to about 235, then went back down to about 207... then went back up to 244 before I shut her down... Fans were running... I am thinking a stuck thermostat... anyone agree? Disagree?? Ideas??
Hmm... ok. So I went to Advanced Auto Parts and got a new thermostat (Stant 186 degree) and now I am wondering if I got the wrong part after reading some posts. Is it supposed to come with the housing? Is 186 degree the correct temp??

Yes, the thermostat comes with a housing. This happend to me too when I was replacing my water pump. O'reilly's has the correct one that comes with the housing. Advanced doesn't.
