OK, I recently added a Vararam to my 2001 and everything was fine. Today I was working on getting the radio to read an MP3 disc and the car was idling. It began to get hot and the cooling fans never came on. I drove the car and the temp quickly came down, but went back up again when I let the car idle in the garage. Once again the fans didn't come on. While checking the fans, I noticed that the daytime running lights are also not lit. My first thought is a blown fuse somewhere but, I have checked pretty much every fuse I can find and none are blown,so I'm thinking I may have a loose wire somewhere. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.
I'd also check for wiring connectors you might have accidently pulled apart during the install - look down through the pass. side headlight
door when its open - big connector lays down at the bottom of the
bumper cover -- maybe that or some other one loose????
Already tried that. No fans. Car got so hot the check engine light came on; gauge said 240. Interestingly, I can drive the car and it will cool back down to 180-190 and stay there. I have checked the fuses and they are good. No idea how to remove the relays and check them. Also checked for lose wiring connectors where I installed the Vararam and can find nothing loose, including the big one under the right headlight. What is strange is that the Daytime running lights are out, as well. I don't have any codes either. drove the car on Monday and it was fine. Totally baffled.
The fact that your car stays "cool" when you drive it is not a surprise as air is passing through the radiator. All the fans do is move air through the system and when they don't come on when standing still----NO air!
It certainly sounds like something came unplugged or shorted during your install. Good luck, Ron
OK, I decided to try disconnecting the battery for five minutes. This is a trick I have used on my Chrysler 300C to reset the PCM when the power windows acted up.. Anyway, after re-connecting the battery and starting the car, the fans immediately came on, as did the daytime running lights. I let the car idle for some time, and the fans would come on speed up or slow down. Car never got over 200. So, for now, it is fixed. Not sure if it is just coincidence or it actually worked. Time will tell.
I was going to suggest looking at the ground pack at the right, forward, top, frame rail adjacent to the hood riser where those item's grounds all come together but then you rebooted and things fixed themselves.
any time I've got any problem that might be electrical - radio, lights ,fans, etc- the first thing I do is disconnect the negative battery terminal for 2 minutes.
