Don't know what happened here. THe installation went great - the posts on the forum are right on- went out for a test dirve. The first 15 minutes shifts were stiff but clean. No problems. Then on the interstate when I went to shift into 5th - it went into the neutral position, but would not go up into 3rd of 5th. Got it back into 4th, got of the interstate only to find out it is now stuck in 4th - no neutral - no nothing. Has anyone had these problems? or any ideas what is going on :mad
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (mnasrallah)
Man..I don't know  unless the front shifter stop came loose & has lodged down in the shifter, did you adjust & tighten the lock nut on both stops? I have about 500 miles on mine so far with no problems, good luck, & let us know your findings.
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (mnasrallah)
Find a post by Patches. He had a similar problem and explained it in detail. Was something minor that needed adjusting or something. I was reading his posts since he has a great tutorial on how to install the Hurst. Guess the next day his hung in fourth too.

Hope this helps.

Yep. The shifter stop nuts vibrated loose and I lost 1st, 3rd and 5th. The big set screws that act as stops vibrate clockwise if the locknuts have loosened and thus thread in towards the shifter shaft keeping it from moving.
Just pull the console and see if the stops have worked their way loose. If that's the case, either remove them completely (I did - no stops really necessary on our tranny) or readjust them and tighten the nuts. If you leave them in, you may want to add another locknut behind the first to prevent it from backing out.
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (Patches)
Patches is right on. Same thing happened to me. Would not go into third, then it would not go over to second, then stuck in fourth. It was the stop bolt. I don't know why Hurst bothered with these stops since the trans has built in stops.
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (VetterMan)
Thanks Guys - I'm going to limp the car home tonight - 4th gear in 5:00 traffic - that ought to be fun - and tighten down the set screws. I'll update in the morning if this is the fix
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (mnasrallah)
mnasrallah,
I was stuck in a parking lot at a dyno day when mine jammed. I borrowed a couple of tools (#15 Torx and 3/8" socket wrench) and had it fixed in minutes. If you can find these, you might be able to get it working for the drive home. Good Luck! :seeya
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (Patches)
I think a lot of these problems are caused by ourselves, after reading this I went into my garage and took my whole console apart to check my nuts on my Hurst. I have no miles on it since it is still put away for the winter. I noticed that I had not done those locking nuts up that well. (not knowing then, what we know now) I am sure they would of came loose, maybe even when on our long trip down to Cruise-in 3. Had we had known that they should be done up good and tight, we might not be reading any posts on this. I tightened mine up and used "Lock Tight" on them. I am expecting no problems with these stops at all. By the way, from start to finish 18 minutes! :D
Re: Help! New Hurst Shifter stuck in 4th (racer44)
Patches was right. I opened up the console and the set screw nut was in the bottom of the well and the screw had worked itself all the way in - thus locking out 1-3-5- & reverse. Patches suggested removing the two set screws all together which I did. I did not notice anything different with the screws removed, even if you tried to extend your shift as far as possible. At this point, I would recommend to all to remove the set screws, they do not seem to serve any purpose.
Thanks to all for the help

Well, I am not taking my console out again. :nonod: You are probably right with just taking them out, but I am sure with locktight, I won't have any trouble.

I wouldn't either, if I were you, racer. Our tranny has it's own stop. I heard the Ripper doesn't come with stops anymore. The Hurst stops are redundant.
As I've said, the stops are of little value because of the trans' internal stops. The shifter stops are only of value to abusive drivers who apply way too much force to the shifter. If you have any doubt about how to set the stops, or any concern of them causing a problem, PLEASE REMOVE THEM. They are most likely of no value to you. They are not set at the factory, they are simply bolted in place. If used they REQUIRE YOUR ATTENTION upon installation to be properly set!
B&M removed their stops for a variety of reasons- cost reduction, simplification, complaints from those not setting them right, and vibration noise when they would touch the stick.
Hurst still wants to incorporate them because when installed right they can be useful, and we want to give the extreme drivers what they want. But for many this feature is best removed.
If you're going to use the stops, make sure to use lots of Loctite on the portion of the threads that screw into the base. Hurst will be adding a separate note in the package as well to advise installers to do this. Please read the instructions carefully!
