Default Drag race an automatic

What would be the preferred launch method with an auto trans? Rev engine with brake on?

Thanks

As I understand if your computer sees over 1200 rpm and no mph it will begin to take out timing. After many passes I have run my best times launching at a slight increse in rpm (1000) and letting the trans shift itself.Running 12.82 with a stock car with only a Vararam and Corsa catback with a predator tune.(3.15 gears)

I do my burnouts in 1st gear, shifting into 2nd, leave the line at 1500 rpm with the gearshift in 3rd and let it shift itself, my trans tune is 1st to 2nd @ 6300 rpm, then 2nd to 3rd @ 6400 rpm, running 11.42 with 3.42, 2800 Vig, and a few other mods...

What are your mods, what kind of tires are you running and what kind of rwhp and torque are you putting down? Reason I ask is I'm having some real traction problems and am changing out my 3.73 gears to 3.42s. Kind of curious what to expect. Thanks for any info.

Default Launch = off at idle...

My stock long block LS1 does good from idle; lately have been launching from 1200 RPM. Best time is 11.75 @ 116 MPH with the original 2.73 differential. Basic modificataions are Vig 2800 SC and LS6 intake with Callaway Honker and longtube headers. Good luck.

baby cam 220/220/581/581/114 LSA, (Vengence racing) fingersmelter (Lingenfelter) ported 243's, yella Terra, 25%$ UD, LG long tube pros, stock injectors, dyno only 410hp/405tp, good tuner though, Nitto drag radials 275/40/17, Vig 2800 (hits at about 3000) 3.42 3-rib with clutches and up graded shafts, run pretty steady 11.42 - 11.50 up here (humid) @ 121 mph...I could probably go with a bit more cam as my heads flow a little over 300 CFM @ 600 lift...but the car runs like stock, gets good MPG on the highway (28-30) and my wifey drives it pretty much every day.way more than I do...

I also rev up to at least 1200 rpm and mash the pedal at the light. Running 11.63 at 118. Best 60' 1.719 with Vig 2800 and 3.42 gears.

I've never tried running in third gear. Is it quicker than in drive? Hard on the tranny?

done both doesnt matter. when running in 3rd when you cross line the gear will help you slow down faster as compared to the limp shift into overdrive and a lower gear ratio. hard on tranny dont know.

Way Too many variables left unanswered by the original poster for an accurate answer from anyone... Track prep and Density altitude also play a factor.. Here in Texas at The Motorplex (Ennis Texas) on a cool dry day at 435 feet elevation my old 99 a4 3.15 geared C5 would do its best if I just floored it. Thats with stock Goodyear Runcraps ,no other mods, bone stock... As I modded the car and changed tires my launch Technique changed. Drag Radials will change the way you launch your car too... In all honesty to Alankb.. you will have to get out to the track yourself and make 4-5 runs down the track(maybe more or maybe less) until you get the perfect launch down.. As you can see you will get a dozen different answers based on a dozen totally different variables/circumstances

niceee! I have a vararam and 273 gears but i ordered a circle d converter (3200-3400rpm) no headers yet. what are your 60' times? this gives me something to look forward to after headers and converter

i torque my stocker to maybe 1000rpm just to preload the suspension a lil and then floor it. seems to yield my best times

The 2:73's are okay off the line with either MT or Hoosier DR's. Usually the 60-foot times are 1.73 to 1.75. Track prep was better on my last two runs and a 1.691 60' got the Arctic White down the track in 11.781@ 115.67 mph. The last pass was the best ever with a 1.683 60' 11.752@ 116.04. Good track prep plus good air equals better times.

I use the same basic technique. I load the drive train but that is about it and have gotten down to 1.667. I run both TC and AH off and I do the burn out and run in 3rd gear.
