well you could check the DIC and post what the error code is...
If you don't know what I'm talking about just go here:
Is it a rebuild? GM had the alternators built by some french outfit I think, it has a lot of extra electronics for monitoring by the cars computer. If you have a non GM or one for another GM car you WILL have issues.
i have a 2004 coupe not a Z06. I had my tuner replace the alternator when we got codes that there were issues. I do not have the codes in front of me. He got a replacement from Delco direct not through a dealer. MY QUESTION . . . . the replacement had issues soon after installation NOT IMMEDIATELY. . I got HIGH VOLTAGE messages and voltage went to 16 + and got ABS and Traction Control messages too but no codes for them. HIGH VOLTAGE code. So he replaced the alternator again with another new DELCO. Got 25 miles down the road and got SERVICE CAR message on the DIC . . . it was the ABS messages. Where do you get an EXACT replacement ? Yes I know the dealer. He works at a dealership. He knows what he is doing. I would appreciate MORE information on the replacement of alternators on a 2004 C5 THANKS
Evil-Twin has posted on this many times. If you don't know who he is, he's a retired GM engineer that worked on the C5 project for I think about 5 years and is a forum member and frequent poster. He has 7 items that he designed as part of our C5's.
Anyway, he says that the C5 alternators are keyed to your individual car and to never let go of your original. If it goes bad have it rebuilt but never replace. The only fix is to go to the dealer and have a switching device installed along with a new alternator. Not cheap.
I'd suggest you PM him so he can give you a better explanation.
I wouldn't put it past GM for something like this but don't you think it would be noted in the FSM?
I could find no reference to anything like that in the electronic version of the FSM for my 2003.

Me either, but it's strange it would not be mentioned in the manuals used by the dealers to service the car. But then it is GM...
Friend of mine was a mechanic for years at a Buick dealership. He was doing an alignment (freebie ) on one of my cars and told me about one model of Buick that had a relay under the center of the dash up toward the windshield that failed fairly often.
He said it was replaced by going through a defrost vent, speaker grill or radio surround, don't really remember which. The next model year GM completely redesigned the dash but the relay wasn't moved.
For that model year they had to pull the entire dash cap. Turned a 15 minute job into several hours.
