I have had my 1998 vette for a couple of weeks now and I have been driving it quite a bit. I bought the car with 22,000 miles on it. So, as you can see it has not been driven very much. My question is: There seems to be a little bit of an oil leak now, I think possibly rear seal, Is an additive to help lubricate the seal okay to put in engine?
you could try high mileage oil, but I wouldn't try adding an additive.
I don't trust additives for the most part. My thinking is the high mileage oil has been tested to ensure the lubricant properties have not been reduced and not screw w/ sensors.
Before you add an additive that may not be compatible with you motor oil I recommend you try using an oil with a seal conditioner already incorporated into the formulation. Mobil 1's high milage formula claims to have a seal conditioning additive. I've used this oil for other reasons on both of my C-5s with good results.
BTW, check your PCV system for proper operation.
The first thing you are going to want to do if you havent done so already is determine where the leak is coming from by getting under it with a flashlight. I thought I had an oil leak on mine and it turns out that it is just the power steering rack which at least for me is a whole lot better than an oil leak.
And the additives that you put in your oil are basically band aids they just cover up the problem until it gets worse, I wouldnt think that it is your rear seal with only 22,000 but there is always a possibility.
Oh and my dad just sold his 97 with 38,000 which is quite abit more than you have but no problems with any oil leak although you could see a very small amount of oil coming out of the steering rack.
Thanks, it is my understanding a car with several years on it but with low milage the seals have a tendency to dry out therefore leak when you start driving it. I am taking it to the Dealer tomorrow for a oil change, I guess Mobil 1 synthedic oil should be what I ask for at the Dealer?

Not to steal the thread, but just a thought/question. Since a lot of drivers, me included won't run the cars from sometime in Nov until April due to the weather, would the Mobil 1 high mi be better to keep seals and gaskets from having problems due to lower use, or is that not a big deal with these engines and using regular Mobil 1 or similar and keeping up with oil changes ?

I think the manufacturer would be better suited to answer this question.
