So I am getting a LS3 427 short block and want to reuse my low mileage LS1 Heads on it. The Question is which set of ARP head studs do I order the LS1 studs or the shorter LS3 bolts. I believe I need the longer bolts because of head height. Am I correct ???
LS1 Stage 3 Ported, Polished & Coated Heads 853 Casing 66CC
Featured in magazines like GM High Tech Performance, these are our famous Stage 3 Ported, Polished and Coated heads that have produced many 450 + RWHP cars. They start out as 241 or 853 castings (original LS1 heads). We totally disassemble, clean and prepare them for a complete porting, polishing and coating. When finished, they are ready to bolt up to your car with new 2.02" / 1.57" stainless valves, and competition valve job
I understand they will actually fit and work just not sure what kind of performance I will Get. From GM - The 6.2L engines (LS3, L92, etc.) can use any head except for the LS7 and C5R, while the 7.0L LS7 and C5R blocks can use any LS-series head
I am retaining my Heads so I can run the 112 Maggie I also have. I plan to upgrade the heads & Maggie at a later date. $$$$ won't permit it now, but had to replace the block because of a broken Crankshaft that took out the pilot bearing and slave cylinder.
you'll have some shrouding but it's certainly possible. I have LS1 heads on an LS7 block using ARP Studs, but unfortunately I don't know if they're a special length.
As for power, I have over 600 at the crank with a tiny little cam (230/227 .521 int .571 ex)
so you can make some ponies with ls1 heads on a bigger bore. I think with the newer heads out there you're leaving a lot on the table, but you realize that, and I understand the $$.
With a 427, I would not even consider it. With your larger bore in the 427, I don't think they would even work. Look for some good aftermarket ones.
This isn't true. It's just they're not the best for a larger bore. It's not like you have the 4.125" bore of a 427, using a LS3 stroker. You CAN use your present heads, but I think you'd do better off doing what WKCMD advised. You can get a pretty penny for your worked LS1s which'll offset the cost of L92s. I'd get worked L92s, like stg2 from a vendor, depending on what you're planning on for an intake. You have a few options.
