I was wondering how much HP increase you can get away with before you have to start building up the 4l60e?
I had the 4l60e in a silverado that I supercharged and I blew that trans apart..... literally... I understand that I was pushing double the weight in the truck and gearing and weight distribution and so on but that trans couldnt take 550HP.
I plan to put this car to about 450 at the wheels and didnt want to find out the hard way again
I ran 414 NA (unlocked TC on A4) and 563 sprayed for several years with no issue. HOWEVER, I only went to the track twice, and didn't beat on it that much on the street, although I am running 305 Nittos.
I'm around 700rwhp now and have made MANY full throttle blast, but it's a matter of time
I think anything over 350 RWHP on a car with miles will eventually go with poor or racey driving habits--- Too many WOT shifts from 2-3 & 3-4 will hurt a stock trans---Even more so are the WOT downshifts from 3-2 or 4-2 where bands unlock and clutches engage at the same time- When rebuliding you can lenghten life and add reliability by using the "Beast" sunshell and installing the "Z" pak 3-4 clutch kit ( the weakest paart of a 4L trans )
PS: getting the trans temps over 200* for an extended time shortens life quickly as well
This is a good question and has been discussed many times. You can do a search read through responses. I've been running H/C gears and stall converter for a couple years now and no problems thus far. Made 20 plus passes down the strip and I get on it at least once virtually every time I drive the car. I do have a stacked plate tranny cooler and that probably helps some. If it blows, RPM to the rescue.
there is so much to upgrade on that trans, its very easy to turn it into a beast you can spent around 500-600 in parts and have her last a very long time. but its all in the better parts
