Just keeping this thread alive because it's so interesting and I've learned alot, yet I'm, bored - I think I'm ADD! All I know is I hit 160 in 5th and ran out of road - these cars sure are fast and stable at high speeds.

hey man if you really did do this, sue the origianl owner of your car. By my calcualtions the numbers are right on if you have 2.73's. You know the 3.42 gears are desierable for an auto car and he may have thought that heck he is selling the car mine as well make some money off the original parts. I belive that it is possible for this to happen. Further more i wish that people would help you identify the problem with your car instead of calling names. with that said check and see what gears you have. Let me know how the law suit goes.

Now, how then can I tell how "off" my speedometer is? It seems really accurate at around 60 MPH, but how can I find anyone stupid enough to drive next to me at 150 MPH to see how far off it is?
Quicksilver97! I'll run side by side with you to 160, 170, or 180 and compare speedos...if you'll wait on me! :D

Adam,
I used to agree with you about tire circumference and may still agree with you in the future but I had a learning experience a couple of years ago and am still coming to terms with it. My son used to work at Bosch as an ABS/Brake System engineer. One vacation he drove home one of their test vehicles that was set up to use the wheel speed sensors to detect a flat tire. It seems that as a tire goes flat that its effective radius changes even though its circumference does not. This causes the tire to rotate faster and the wheel speed sensor can pick it up. Now Bosch like any other company doesn't usually invest money in ideas that have no basis in fact so I have to believe what he told me was true. But I still have trouble with the radius changing and the circumference staying the same.

I did the calculations too and it came out pretty close. I'm going to call the original owner this week and get his input. If they are in fact 2.73's, I don't think I'll be going through any lawsuits. I'll probably just buy a set of 3.42's or 3.73's and be done with it.

Get another guy from the forum from PA to go with you next time. Case closed.
How's that going to close this case? All that's going to do is verify that the speedometer actually says 160. It won't give me an answer as to why it says 160.

I agree with the guy a few days back - get a GPS and check your speed. I have one, unfortunately I am not close. But it's not hard to get one for around $100 now. Go to a boat supply store and see if someone hanging around has one he'll let you try out. Of couse, you could also just have someone drive along side you and check your speed.
