Default Someone please explain 1 - 3 rib diff?

I know this is a newbie question but I did a search and I couldn't come up with what I was looking for... First of all, what is a "rib", and what's the difference between 1 and 3 rib? I'm thinkin about going to a 3.42 gear...

As seen on the picture below, there are 3 "ribs" toward the front of the diff where it mates to the transmission. The 1 "rib" diff only has one toward the front. When using trans/diff brace, there really isn't that much difference in strengh IMHO.

Originally my thought was more ribs = better, but further reading indicated they seem to be pretty similar in breakage and the premium $ for a 3 rib wasn't worth it.

Thanks for the pic! This answers my question.

If useing the trans/diff brace, how strong are these rear ends? If it's the same as the truck world I came from, then the taller the gear (i.e., 2.73 vs 3.42) the more strength it will hold? Then i'll prob just stick with the 2.73's and get the trans/diff brace. I'm wanting to go mid-low 11's

One of the trans/diff I built runs low 10's/141 MPH on slicks. The diff was a 1 rib and running 3.90's with trans/diff brace. I think you should be fine.

I would imagine it must be better or GM wouldn't of went that way.

I'm guessing you had hardend output shafts though?

That rear did have 300M shafts but the C6 Z06 shafts will stand up to almost anything. Bret's 930 RWHP 02 Z06 runs a stock C6 Z06 diff with stock internals without any issues. He also traps high 140 MPH.
