You used to have to change the reluctor wheel when you were putting a "different" engine in, now you can buy an "electric black box" which will make them compatible.
Thanks, I have a 99 C5 LS1 and was thinking about replacing it with an LS3...so it looks like i will need the box I've been doing searches on the subject and saw Lingenfelter sells them.. If i purchased one, i wonder what a tunner would charge extra for install and labor for one of these thanks guys for the info so far.....

If you're installing a pre-assembled engine, seems like the converter box is the way to go. It's just easiest overall.
On the other hand, if you're building an engine, just choose a crankshaft with the 24 wheel. Most all the crank companies give you the choice. This is what I did.
