Default Riddle me this ( steering lock observation )

My 99 automatic has had the recall done ( I can turn the steering wheel with car off ) There are no messages on my display but 1 out of 10 times I drive the car, it will cut off at 2 mph. ( has new battery )

I installed a viper 5101 remote start, and if I start remotely, in over 50 starts, it has never shut off?

So why does it shut down sometimes when starting with key and not remotely? To keep from shutting off at 2mph, do I need to have a tune done (bone stock car) and change fuel shut off to 200mph or is there another cheap/free way to fix.
Thanks

You need to put in the steering column lock bypass. I think its Corvettes of Houston or similar that sells it.

I think he has the bypass installed because he can turn the wheel with the car off.

Do you get any security lights? Did you install the remote start?

I bought the car a month ago and first time it happened I checked vin for outstanding recalls ( there were none, all had been competed) and correct, I can turn wheel even when car is off.

I do not get any security lights , or dic messages on screen other than tpms sensor until I replaced that.
When it happens, it starts up fine, put in reverse to back out of driveway roll a couple feet then shuts off.

I bought the viper unit and installed it last week ( needed key fobs as my car didn't come with any, and the viper unit came with fobs ) Everytime I start car from remote, there is never any problem. If I use the key to start, occassionally it will shut down after car starts moving.

any thoughts?

Now that I think about it I don't belive auto's have the column lock.

Once the brake is pressed the remote start is off. I would think if it's a short in the cylinder it would still happen with the remote start. On the other hand the IGN switch is the easiest place to start.

8VETTE7 is correct. The computer is programmed to shut off the fuel supply to the engine at 2 mph if it thinks the column lock is in the wrong position. A CLB is a relay that fools the computer into thinking that the column lock is still connected. This is also part of what is installed when the recall work is done. If the CLB relay malfunctions or if a glitch occurs and the computer mis-reads the relay position, it will shut the fuel off at 2 mph.

For this reason, when I installed my CLB, I also bought an HP Tuners programmer and re-programmed the computer to set the fuel shut-off at 255. Now if my CLB malfunctions, I will get a code but my vette will still run. The HP Tuners can also be used for diagnostics so it can be useful in other ways.

You don't have to buy an HP Tuners. There are plenty of people out there who can do it. The trick is to find one. I didn't have a lot of time to look so I just bought it. And forget about going to the dealer. For liabilty reasons, they are limited in what they can do.

It's been a couple of years since I did the mod so some of the details have been forgotten but this subject has been covered in this forum numerous times. Check out the sticky.

Not true, Chevy dealers use a K-harness. A "CLB" is dfferent and is offered as an aftermarket part only. It is also the only fix for the CL issue.

so, do autos have the column lock as mentioned? I have an auto and really don't know, but it seems all of the issues I have read on here deal with manuels.

You are correct, with remote start, if the key isnt in the ignition and turned to run position, the car will shut off when I hit the brake.

It will start with the key everytime, I can put in gear and idle fine, the only shutoff occurs when starting to move ( occassionally )

From everything I've found searching, reprogramming the fuel shut off is what I need to eliminate my problem with key?

Ok. I wasn't aware the CL was on earlier autos. Thanks for clearing that up.
