Re: Optima red top vs. Optima yellow top (got2bblu)
Can anyone explain the difference between the red top and yellow top batteries. Who would have the best prices for these batteries? Thanks.
The yellow top batteries are designed for deep cycle applications such as marine use. The red top is what you'll need for the car. I have the red tops in both the 95 & 98. Outstanding quality and function. I bought the one in the 95 at Batteries Plus, and the other one at Interstate Batteries. Both were list price with no discount. I have seen them in one Costco store, but not in several others. If you can find a Costco that sells them, that would be the best price I know of.

As stated above, the Red Top will do the trick for the majority. I chose the yellow top for added insurance against battery life being reduced by excessive discharges. The Red Top as other standard batteries, can not survive many total discharges without being damaged. If you do not have too many extra power consuming accessories or store you vehicle for long periods of time while it is still under minor loads like the anti theft devices, the red top will do just fine. It will return to life if the discharges are few in number. The yellow top by contrast, will remain undamaged after hundreds of discharged cycles providing added protection under a total discharge environment. Both type of batteries will work fine for most applications with the red top costing about $20 less.
Re: Optima red top vs. Optima yellow top (Driller)
Great comparision by shockwave. Those were exactly the reasons I went for the yellow top. Ordered mine from LAPD here in the forum mall, check them out for good $ inclucing shipping so there is no tax & great customer service, give shawn a call.

Thanks for the replies. No tax and free shipping make it about the same price as Costco after sales tax is added.
Re: Optima red top vs. Optima yellow top (got2bblu)
Yellow tops weighs more than the Red's and the Red's weigh more than both stock batteries from the 79-00 and the 01 and 02's. Deep cycle batteries are designed for things like trolling motors where you deplete the battery frequently. Car batteries should rarely get totally discharged. Either way, be sure to get the cover in your choice of colors. So even Yellow Vettes can have a red top battery with a yellow cover. :smash: :yesnod:  :seeya

I went with the yellow top b/c I am installing a full aftermarket stereo and wanted the extra security that the yellow top provides. :yesnod:
My personal stance (I've held it since the beginning) is Yellow Top in cars, period. The Red's only advantage over Yellow is more cranking amps, useful in very cold weather, or cranking large diesels, etc. Both Red and Yellow ALREADY have more CCA than the stock battery, so starting is not a concern. The Yellow outdoes the Red in every other aspect, it lasts longer, and can be allowed to discharge far more times without permanent damage. I'd always pony up the little bit of extra and get the Yellow. LAPD has the best prices of anywhere I've found on it.
Blue top is identical to the Yellow, except with an extra set of bolt posts on top.

Just got my Red Top from LAPD last week. $110 total. Received the battery in less than 24 hrs from Cali to my doorstep in Northern VA. WOW LAPD
