For the past week or so there has been an intermittent drivetrain noise that i cant seem to pinpoint. Heres what i know so far:
Cold or hot, it occurs but seemingly at random times
The sound reminds me of quickly rubbing a piece of sandpaper against another surface, and isnt continuous. More of a *shh* *shh* shh* sound in that it pulses, and speeds up with the RPMS
It doesnt occur with the clutch pedal depressed and reving the engine.
When sitting still, in 1st gear, clutch pressed, as i release the clutch i can hear the sound starting and then speeding up to match the engine RPMs as the car begins to move forward
It is only audible when accelerating. If the car is in gear, but no gas is applied (like when engine braking) it doesnt happen, but as soon as gas is applied it starts.
Only mods are shifter and oil catch can, which were done months ago.
How difficult of a job would you rate this for the average home mechanic? Any specialty tools or accessories required? I've got a good floor jack, stands, metric and standard sockets, torque wrench etc that i have acquired over the past few years while working on this car.
I have more time than I have money lol.
I looked into the BMW couplers as well. Would these be recomended over the GM pieces for a stock daily car?
I would agree with Corvette Don. If you have time (and warm weather), you can do this yourself. There are a lot of write ups regarding R&R torque tubes. Do a search. RPM Transmissions has a nice poly bushings you can upgrade to.
German coupler up front
Solid coupler in the back
New bushings
Bottle jack to support the engine
Floor jack for lifting the car and transmission
4 jack stands to hold the car up
2 jack stands to hold up the suspension
Some wood to cushion between the engine/tranny during lifting/lowering
Large snap-ring pliers
Torque wrench
Are there any strange sized sockets or wrenches required? I just want to make sure before i get everything apart. I think I need an 18mm right? Thanks.
Add loctite to the list. Not sure red or blue or which fastners, but get a service manual. Always hard to guess GM on reusable fastners, thread locker where and which one ect......
Do you have air and air tools? Its a big help if you do. If youve never done the job its a task the first time out. Im a seasoned mechanic and I have a very large set of Snap On tools and the first time I did the job it took me about 10 hours including cleaning of underside and power washing the diff/tranny assembly when I had it out. If I were you, and you havent had a clutch replacement, I would pony up the dough and add an LS7 clutch.
Good Luck
I dont have air tools but i do have manual tools and will purchase an electric impact wrench to help out. I am using AllData to do the job, and i found a post on another forum that lists the wrench and socket sizes required.
I dont intend for a clutch change, but once i get the torque tube out i am going to look over the entire driveline to see if anything needs replacing. Im going to get a speed bleeder to flush the clutch and brake systems while im under there. If i see that the clutch is on its way out (i doubt it since i havent had any problems with it but you never know) ill pony up and put in a new one, but otherwise im gonna stick with the bushings and the couplers for now.
I have built an engine before (a classic sbc not an LS1 though) and have done miscellaneous work on the car but nothing quite of this magniude, but i can honestly say i am excited to get to do some "real" work on this car!
I would really still put a new clutch,PSi plate, flywheel & pilot bearing in while youre in there. Its a big job and silly to do it twice. I think you may change your mind after you see how much work you need to do to get the bushings done. Either way, good luck to you!!
*edit* you may also think about a pair of new axle seals as well.
2015 with 25k car sat for a month when 1st starting up and depressing clutch hear a clicking noise. It diminishes.as the car warms up took it out for a 20 mile run today no more clicking. Any advice.
