Default Catch can

Looking for some help here concerning a catch can install. I have read many threads here concerning catch cans but have not found an answer to my problem. The Z06 I recently bought had the PCV system completely disabled. There was a breather on the intake cover as well as the pass. side valve cover. That's all.
I bought a catch can to install and am wondering if I need to run a pcv valve or just run the catch can. Is the pcv valve necessary? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

If you have breathers then you don't need a catch can as there is no PCV system routing the gasses in to the intake.

Thanks Munch, but all the reading I have done seems to point toward needing some system to remove gases, condensation and pressure build up that is present in the crankcase. I am lost If I need to install the pcv valve I will probably have to go to the dealer to get the proper lines due to different sizes for inlet/outlet. Steve

What year is your Z, because I believe a 2004 has a built in PCV. I run a PCV, a catch can, and a breather cap because they all serve a purpose. I pulled the PCV once and it threw lean codes. I guess the PCV also serves as a metered orifice, so I was told.

If you're boosted with forced induction, the breather is needed. Otherwise I don't see why. A catch can and PCV, yes run em both. Here's a pic of mine.

Thanks Chris. Is that the PCV you are running between the intake and catch can?

If so, where can I get one of those? Steve

I had the same dilemma when I was trying to install my catch can. Without a source of fresh air, I was getting REALLY loud squeaking noises at idle from all the pressure in the crankcase. I did exactly when Bill Curlee did in the thread I'm linking below. Shoot to post #65 for the pic of what he did. Seems to be working great thus far, and my TB blade was clean last time I checked

Hope this helps

I have the stock PCV going into the lower intake valley. That silver part is a check valve, to ensure I don't boost the crankcase. When I installed that check valve, I decided to pull the PCV, since I thought it works the same way. That's when I got lean codes, learned about the metered orifice, and put it back. So what year is your Z? It might help to post a pic of the same area. Show us what you're workin with.

It is an 02 Z. I don't have a good close up pic of the area, but there is nothing in the way of hoses. Everything has been blocked off. The pass. side valve cover has a vent, which you can see in the pic, The intake valley pan has an almost identical one mounted on the fitting. I can't get a better pic right now but will later if needed. Thanks, Steve.

I guess my best bet now is to go to a dealer and order the hoses and get the pcv valve installed and route it through the catch can. And I would guess it would be best to leave the filter on the oil filler cap to provide fresh air?

What is the car being used for? If it's daily driver then get rid of the ls6 PVC system and get the post ls6 corvette PVC system(no valley cover vent). There is a good reason for gm discontinuing it... It sucks and fills your intake with oil. I have seen and heard of countless people have issues with it, with or without a in line catch can.

If you don't daily drive it and see a lot of high rpm you are going to want to vent the driver side valve cover with a -12 fitting with a hose to a catch can that has a breather on it. This is what I have on my vette and it still catches a lot of moisture/oil mist. One downside to doing it this way is you get a strong oil smell when coming to a stop so I ran a hose from my my catch can where the breather would go to my air filter and the smell is virtually gone now. And I daily drive mine and I am installing this set up on a few other vettes for people I know.
