My Vararam install and thoughts
Well I have had the CAI for a week or two and have not had time to put it on due to the weather and restoring a Camaro.
Today was a nice day here in So-Cal and I thought I would put it on. I used this DIY. Its the best one I have seen. http://www.cajundude.com/vararam.htm
It took me 1 hour and 45 min to install. The install was very very easy. Mine fits great. The lid is on very tight and everything lined up the first time.
I started the car and let it idle for a few min before I took it for a test drive. The car had an aFe stg II CAI on it and I loved the intake, but I wanted to see what everyone was talking about with the Vararam. Before the install it was had to drive the car at 45 mph in 4th gear because of the cam (MS3). With the Vararam the car runs alot better and it doesnt mind being in 4th going 45. The car would also surge after a WOT run, now it doesnt. I can also hear the intake pulling in air which is pretty cool. I didnt really notice alot of a change in the low end. The top end on the other hand does pull alot harder. I took one of my friends with me on the test run that had been in the car before I put the Vararam on. He didnt know I had changed them out. He asked me what I did to it because it felt faster than the last time he rode in it.
So far I am happy with it. I only got to drive it for 15 min. If anything changes I will be sure to let everyone know. I didnt have time to take pictures of the install but here are a few of it installed. Anyone want to buy a aFe CAI??? Oh yeah, I didnt get any codes.
Give the ECM about 50 miles of normal driving to "learn out"--the fuel trims--IF the Varram is adding more air than before--you'll have positive fuel trims til they learn out--(lean) at P/T-- However that positive fuel trim % is also ADDED to your WOT fueling as well as a safety-- which will make your car richer than programmed and maybe lazy
IF the car after learning out starts to act weird like surging or dying but it didn't at 1st--then more than likely it was lean to begin with--which indicates an adjustment to the "desired airflow" table or fuel trims- I use the MAF table to correct fuel trims less than 15% as you can make adjustments precisely in the MAF HZ range where needed and not everywhere ( global) The %'s that are added with a + fuel trim to WOT are recorded at the point " just before going to WOT"
So it may come from a point way down on the HZ table(Lower RPM's)
than you might think------ a negative fuel trim however always locks on "0" at WOT--again as a safety----

Thanks for the input guys. The car was running rich before the install. I'll take it out and try to get more miles on it. This Camaro project is taking most of my time right now.
You'll LOVE IT! Now you can get a Vararam Powerduct installed to let it flow even better! Mine is absolutely crazy with the complete Vararam installed!
