Default Rear end knocking

I've got a knocking sound coming from my driverside wheel well. It happens when I start to accelerate or take my foot off the pedal. I can feel slack that I feel was not there before and the sound seems to coincide with said slack.

What could this be?

Check the axle nut and verify that it is tight if you have not done so already. The torque specification is in the service manual.

Does the knock happen when you are driving down the road and if so, what gears?

It mainly happens while in the lower 4 gears, but I believe that's because its at lower speeds.

What I'm going to suggest may sound corny but I'm thinking old school diagnostics here. Try getting the rear wheels up off the ground and of course blocking the fronts from both sides or using jack stands. Get under there and try rocking each of the rear tires with the trans in neutral and see what you hear as a result. Try it again after putting the transmission in gear. Listen for the location of the knocking sound therefore identifying if its a CV joint on the half-shafts, differential, transmission or torque tube bushing.

Check the nut on top of the rear shocks above the mounting plate. If that nut loosens up you'll get a knocking sound when you hit bumps.
