Default Whinning noise coming from engine - Help

I have noticed my engine has been making a whining noise that gets louder as the rpm's get higher. It makes this noise when driving but also when it is parked and now in gear so I know it has to be coming from the engine. Any idea what this could be?

could be alot of things an a/c belt tensioner, a engine belt tensioner, the engine idler arm tensioner or maybe your altenator or it can just be your engine belt or a/c belt but remember to find out which one of these is your problem before you start changing out parts.

Maybe I'll start with the belt. Thanks for the info.

Don't just change parts. If you are not capable of making a diagnosis, the team up with a local forum member, or take your car to a trust shop.

The belt is starting to feel a little old anyways and that is easy enough. I will be taking it to a shop i go to if that doesn't fix it.

I'm not familiar with evaluating a serpentine belt by feel. A quick visual inspection will tell you if replacement is needed immediately, by the presence of cracks.

A mechanic's stethescope is an invaluable (and cheap) tool for pinpointing noises.

I would also check for vacuum leaks.

Take the belt off and start the engine. Does the noise go away? If so you know its something that the belt turns. Spin the pulleys by hand and you may be able to tell what it is.
On my car that noise usually comes from the passenger seat

Is it more of a whining sound than a whinning sound?

Chances are and hopefully it is only a belt. Don't apply any of the snake oil "dressings" to it. If you determine it is the belt, replace it. In fact, replace both belts.

While your under the hood check your power steering fluid and make sure it's not low. My old beater (not a vette) had this problem just this past weekend. It wasn't squealing but did have a loud whine.

Hopefully I can figure this out this weekend since I'll be back home with all my tools. I like the idea about taking off the belt.
