Default Auto shifter not showing gear selected...

i tried a search sorry i had no luck.
when i got the car the gear was never being highlighted, the orange plastic that supposed to demonstrate the gear moves all over when i brake or press the gas. I opened it up trying to see if it was just a plastic that could be fixed or glued found nothing i cant figure out how this thing works (how the shifter is connected to the drive selection indicator) or why its broken.
seeing if anyone knows what could be the culprit just want to make sure what it is before trying to replace parts that wont fix it.
thanks.

Mine is in the same condition. Had the shift mechanism open several years ago to remove the lead from the Park solenoid located in the rear if the shifting area. When, not if this happens to you it is impossible to get the shifter out of park.
Someone here posted how he made a new indicator out of aluminum and had several pics of how to do it. PITA if you ask me.
Unless you can't pass inspection I would leave the indicator alone. By now you can feel what gear you are in and the positions are marked on the bottom of the shifting mechanism.
If you do decide to invade the gear box consider removing the terminal from the Park solenoid so you are not someday stuck many miles from home.

ok thanks for the reply BIGHANK i don't really have a performance problem its just annoying. Just trying to fix the few flaws. The car is driven by the whole family so i just feel a bit more comfortable that they will not mistake D and R! LOL
ill see how to make a new indicator maybe if i got a day off i might tackle this project for now i will put it back together.

Default Look for the post on how to make the new indicator before putting it all back

Also consider pulling the plug on the Park solenoid. I know how much fun it is taking the boot apart.

I wanted something a little more custom for my car. I am the one who posted the metal plate. here is the thread. It does not make it harded to drive for the family.

Default There was anoher post about 9 months ago showing an aluminium indicator

Saw the post where the entire shift mechanism was reworked. Looks nice. What I was refering to was where a member took the internal plastic indicator and reworked it in aluminium to completely replace the internal red indicator. As I remember he also painted a red place on the new aluminium part to show what gear you were in,
