I have a 2001. c5 and I live in Croatia, a little country in EU. I got a steering column lock. Every forum I read, every solution said my car needed to end up in a GM service. In Croatia there is no GM service. I ordered the bypass and contacted the GM service in Austria, they didn't get the problem. Then, my mechanic friend, dissasembled the steering wheel, put in the bypass and used a normal hammer, softly punching it, woke up the mechanism that locks the steering wheel and the steering wheel worked! We heard a click and since then I have had no problems. It costed me a beer.
I hope this'll help everybody that has the same problem like me!
I forgot to say, my car was parked behind the house for about 40-50 days, didn't know how to fix it!
Very interesting. We know the mechanism gets stuck resulting in the lock function taking place which the bypass keeps it from engaging in the first place. Did you take any pictures of this repair action?
We didn't take any pics of the repair itself but it's very easy and simple! Unscrew the lower part of plastic lid underneath the steering wheel. Underneath it all, there's a little box on which we took a few hits with the hammer. Before that we installed the bypass which means it won't happen again. A few times we have engaged the bypass and hit it with the hammer. The car is working great, the only problem is when I lock the car, the steering wheel isn't locked anymore.
My car is a 2001. automatic, I don't know what does CLB mean, is it maybe the bypass, which you can buy in any corvette store? It costs around 50 to 60 bucks.
I have a 2001 manual. Owned it for 1 summer. The column lock got stuck on me twice. When it happens I turn the wheel hard to the right twice to the stop point. I then turn the key and it unlocks. Definitley a mechanical issue with the lock mechanism.
