Hi everyone, I have a 2000 FRC 6 speed with 70k miles. Everything works great, no error messages ( traction control, ABS).
When I reverse, the car moves about 2 or 3 feet and I get a pretty loud "bonk" sound from the right rear. It almost sounds as if someone bonks the side of the car with their fist.
Any ideas before I start tearing into the suspension?
It drives and rides fine.
Thanks in advance
JZ
Sort of sounds like a half-shaft hanging up a little. Have you checked them to insure the grease boots are still in place? I would suggest getting the rear off the ground, trans in neutral, front wheels blocked of course then manually turn the rear wheels and see what you see.
Thanks Dgrant, It's finally warming up a little here in central Pennsylvania, so I will get to check it out.
It sat from Nov til now and the bonk in reverse was very pronounced the first 2 times I got it out. Today - not so much but it still had a sound as if something shifted and made contact inside the trunk when taking off in forward, as it did when I stored it 4 months ago.
Thanks
JZ
Thanks for the great links.
Mine does it when backing straight out of the garage. Now after driving it a couple days, after sitting 4 months, it went away. But it still thumps a bit when I take off forward.

Take the bowling ball out of the trunk and all should be fine.

Have the exact issue on a 2000 coupe A4. It is more of a clank sound if i do a rapid brake action after going 2-3 feet in reverse usually while having the front wheel turned in one direction.
It is not the bump sound when the tire is hoping in a slow turn.
My guess is the spline needs to be lubed or something going on with posi traction.
