Won't start after replacing battery

I'm posting this for a friend with a '99 FRC. After jump starting a dead battery, he drove to get a new one, left it running while purchasing, and drove home. He thinks the "Check Engine" light was on and fuel gauge reading empty, but the gauge has done this before. It has fuel. After installing the new battery, the engine cranks over like a top but will not start. He has disconnected the battery several times and reconnected. Tried to reset DTCs, but said it won't let him. I think he's taking it to the dealer next week. He's had the car since new, has about 50k miles, and I think this is his third battery. He has never had any problems whatsoever with this car except for the fuel gauge. Anyone ever heard of this? I haven't posted on this forum in several years---hope I'm doing it right.

Best to first check and see if the fuel gauge is working right and he is indeed out of fuel!
